I'm in a bit of a bad place for upgrading - a 754 Athlon64 3400+ with an AGP Geforce 6800 Ultra.

I'm not doing a full upgrade for a year or so - I'd need to replace everything, and I can't afford to spend that much until then.

But for now I'd really like a bit more power on the gaming side. If £250 - £350 got me up to the summer I'd be very happy. I think a Graphics card update would be more than enough for me. I feel it's too early to upgrade the old CPU, it still does well enough for games.

I could get an x1800xt or even the x1900xt in this week only and pair it up with a £40 socket 754 pci-e mobo. That way i can keep my 2gb ddr and cpu.

I could also pop in a new cooler and overclock the bejesus out of the old Clawhammer.

Do you think this is a good plan? Other suggestions would be very welcome, bearing in mind I simply can't afford a conroe system atm :p

2 gig ddr sounds good, £40 for a mobo with pci-e would be well worth it if you go for a decent graphics card

I feel for you! I'm in the same position as well atm wishing that I could afford a core2d. Currently on a 2800+ 754 with a 9800pro and 1gb of Ram. Totally grudge buying more DDR1 or a high end AGP card :/. Thought about switching out my board as well, tbh its not a bad plan if you are needing to kick a bit more life into it for another year or so. Unfortunately in my situation I'd also need a new PSU :/.
