Hey

I currently work at a small retail store in a town, I am the ONLY employee at this store.
I have the title of Shop Manager, I run it on my own.
I open up, I stay there All day with a 10 min lunch break 9 till 5:30.
I cash up, fill out banking forms, then close. Every darn day.
Monday to Saturday.

This shop takes £200 to £500 per day.

I have to ask the other store in nearby town for ALL my stock, which they never deliver on time and I get customers moan at ME due to the shop owners laziness and poor organisation skills.

now then... I get paid £250 per week for all that, do you think it's worth it??
I am supposed to be paid a monthly bonus of 10% of the profits but have yet to see a single bonus in past 4 months I have been at the shop.

I get shouted at by the owners when the banked cash is 1 penny out...

so... do i stay? Or do I go? It's a job right... money is money?

They don't even pay me correctly. . Some weeks it's via BT others it's cash in hand from sat take lol

Doesn't sound very ideal at all. You're basically running his business single-handedly, and yet he gets a big cut for doing sweet nothing.. Sounds like he's all set whilst you're there! Doesn't sound like it's worth the money, but the depends on your circumstances and outgoings.

If the shop is only taking £200 - £500 a day I'd be supriised if the owner is making any profit.

Depends on stock costs and area obviously but having a shop open is damn expensive.

Anyway, best to look out for another job while working. If you see something you like which pays more then go for it, the owner may offer you more if you threaten to leave but I doubt it.

It does sound like a lot of work for the money but no point leaving until you find something that pays more.

I very much want to leave, I have no contract tieing me there.
The problem is I want them to give a reference as shop manager would look good on a CV, if I just up and leave I have no hope of getting a reference and I can't force one as there is no proof I work tgere due to no contract of employment.

Also I would feel very guilty if I just left as there is no one else to cover the store, and it would just be shut.

It dosen't sound much. But if the business only takes such a small amount of money could they afford to pay you anymore?

I'd be inclined to stay as I've found its always easier to find work, while working, but indeed it's does sound like your pay doesn't fall in-line with your responsibilities.

Its not 'hard' work so if it was me, either have a word with the store owner or failing that, stick it out while looking for something else.

So below minimum wage, not getting statutory breaks and you do not sound happy. You would be better off working in your local Tesco or Sainsbury.

How old are you ? That isn't adult minimum wage.
Im 25 this year.
Yea I'm aware it's below min wage, unfortunately the 10% bonus is supposed to bring it up to min wage but that's yet to show signs of being paid lol.

Pay is sometimes cash in hand? I hope he's sorting the tax/NI out properly.

I'd find another job. Pronto.
I don't think they have me on PAYE at all. I keep asking for pay slips and the like but get told the accounts woman is away on holiday... For 3 months!

I have been toying with the idea of demanding the minimum wage but they can just cut ties with me in a heat beat if they felt like it.

The shop makes around 2k profit per month after rates and wages.

You are being conned. Contact HMRC.

I work it out to be 15k per year.
But if they aren't paying tax for me then they could be in some serious do do ?

I'm tempted to rat on the owner

You need to offer something back for an increase. For example, if I get takings up by x% (or costs down by y%, profit up... etc.) I expect a cut of greedy%.

The shop was barely doing £150 per day before I started.
its had a 75%+ increase in trade since I started. If they paid me £325 per week after tax I would be happy. I think i will approach this whilst also looking for other employment.
I will also contact hmrc to see if they are paying tax correctly

thanks peeps

You are not getting minimum wage.
You are not gettintg your legal 20mins (in one session) break for being at work 6 hours or more.
You have no paperwork (payslip) showing your Income Tax and National Insurance is being paid.
What about your holiday accrument so far?

I was simply told if I can find someone to cover then I can take a week off when required at half terms and the like to match the wife's holidays. She's a teacher. S

no wonder the shop went through 7 people in 1 year before I started. I might have made a mistake accepting the job

How well do you know the owner/your 'employer' ? If they are on £36k a year tax free and are happy to turn the staff over you might get some bother if you grass him up.
