Laboratory-grown meat could soon be available, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration announcing that they would oversee its production so it could be safely sold to consumers across the country.

I was reading the above link earlier that talked about meat being grown in a lab. It got me wondering how many people here would eat some lab grown meat?

Also, I wonder how many people who avoided meat because of the way the animal was treated would start eating meat again if this became popular?

I honestly think there's probably something a little unhinged about any person who wouldn't prefer it, as the only reason I can think of for feeling such a way would be that the animal suffering (arguably minimal, but still present) is of value to them.

Two reasons I can see people being against it is the fear that it could potentially have unknown health risks, like with GM food. The other reason being that it probably wont taste as good as the real thing. I'm guessing the texture will be off and there will be no blood/fat etc that adds to the taste in a steak.

I'd prefer it.

Same here. Assuming they get the price down to a comparable level (right now, a small beef patty for a small burger would cost about £8).

Perfect meat, no ethical concerns about farming animals, no environmental concerns about farming animals, no ethical concerns about contributing to the evolution of antibiotic resistant bacteria...yes, I'd definitely prefer that.

I've asked a couple of vegetarians about that. They didn't know what they would do and weren't sure whether or not they'd class it as vegetarian or not. It's an interesting question for vegetarians.

It'd be possible to offer human meat if commercial meat culturing was a thing, right? [..]

It would definitely be possible. Whether it would be legal is another question...but what would be the reason for it to be illegal? Nobody would be harmed by it.

Putting emotion aside (yes I know animal cruelty is a bad thing), the main biggest problem with meat production for our growing societies is the amount of land, water and resources cattle require. It's unsustainable for us to eat so much meat and grow our populations.

It's a bit primitive to hunt an animal down, possibly over the course of days, spear and club it to death just to eat it. We made this more efficient with farming, maybe it's time to take the animal out of the equation

I've got no problems with it. It's meat. I'll eat it.

The biggest issue I've heard about it so far is that it is very lean, they need to find a way to get some fat in there.

I don't like meat so its source doesn't really matter to me. I would prefer it as a method of meat production though.

I'd eat pretty much any sort of meat, so yeh. If it could be grown in packer sized slabs that would fit on my smoker, be reasonably priced and taste good, even better!

If they could make healthy food that tastes as good as all the nice tasting unhealthy food then yes

Imagine lab grown sprouts that taste like meat feast pizzas, or broccoli that tastes like a cheese burger with bacon and onion rings

As soon as this becomes a thing actual meat will shoot well into the stratosphere in terms of price as it becomes fundamentally impossible to sell by volume.

So MEGALOLS to all those "true" meat eaters, you'll be paying through the teeth.
