How many of you would enter a sports competition which you knew you had absolutely no chance of winning?

Would you mind taking part in it, just for the enjoyment of playing the sport or would you prefer to enter a competition more on your level which you had a fighting chance of winning?

Is it the taking part that counts or the winning :p

I would only really enter if I had a chance of winning, or a chance of winning in the future.

I do it all the time with Kendo.

In my world, there are two kind of competitions or what we call Taikai's, newbie versions for kyu and none grades like myself which are normally small things, about 30 or so.

At competitions like this, I do really well and often come close to winning. I came 4th in my last one and won Best Fighting Spirit. Then we have the big competitions, like the London Cup, Bowden and Primer Cup where you could face anyone, my last two big fights was against a 5th. (Sensei pretty much) I lost them both. Anyway, as long as I can get a round or two then am happy and it makes the day worth it, if not, then it's still worth it, because it's all practice to me in the end and you get to enjoy the community and social spirit.

On the other hand, when am playing a game and see the other team is nothing but elite players, high ranks vs my low rank team, then I will stick it out to join that team or leave the server and find a other. No point trying to really play, you going to lose and you won't enjoy it. lol

Ofcourse. I (although haven't done for a year due to other commitments) would enter the monthly photography competitions on these very forums for example...

Plenty of far more talented 'togs on here yet it's a bit of fun :)

That's a bit different though. That doesn't require any extra effort on your part. Entering a sporting event means travelling, entrance fee and then losing in front of a hall full of people watching you.

Fair enough to everyone. Each to there own I suppose.

I personally wouldn't enter anything which I couldn't at least make the last 4... or as was mentioned, was about to anytime soon.

Especially if it consisted of travelling a fair distance and paying for the privilege.

I took part in the 'dad race' at my kids school sports - I didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning but it was a good laugh :D

lol how is it?

I've arranged photoshoots purely for that competition, that requires traveling, preparation, organisation etc.

Depends on the sport.

Running, triathlons etc then yes as I know I will NEVER win one but the sheer amount of folk that enter makes me feel good as long as I'm in the top 1/2 or 1/3

Yup pretty much every cycling or sailing competition I have ever entered but I don't care because I love doing it so much and the competitive environment pushes you so much harder which makes it more fun.

If you come 2nd you are just the 1st of the losers.

I always try to win if I enter any sort of competition.

Ill happily enter a competition i have no chance winning. Gives me an idea how i compare and something to aim for.
