Just picked up a flyer for my local (and probably first) LAN centre in Edinburgh. Would you ever visit one and why?

If anyone's interested, the one in Edinburgh is called the ministry of gaming (www.tmog.co.uk) and for some reason they've bought 28 Dell XPS systems, all sporting 1gb 7950GX2's. Poor choice IMO considering the games they're running and that they're only running on 1280x1024 res but hey. :)

I, personally, considered it. Purely because the first hour is free, my connection is rubbish (200 ping).. :(

By LAN centre do you mean internet cafe for gaming or a LAN party?
id love to goto a LAN party, me and my friends have conteomplated going to a few but never got round to it, think itd be a great weekend though

EDIT>>nvm looked at the link(doh!) yeh lan centres are good, used to have one in my town was full of neds(chavs) but it was fun destroying them at the one and only game they played. id like to goto a proper one though

never went to a LAN centre but i guess they could be fun, but i love attending LANs i think they are great.

Actually just remembered im actually going to a LAN centre in a few weeks up in Newcastle at CGZ is it? For a 8team CSS comp :) should be good fun, only a week before i30 too so a nice warm up

Where's that? Dig out some details will ya? :)

I've visited one in Nottingham with a dozen pals - we had a right good laugh. I imagine going on your own just to get a decent ping online might not be the same experience, however.

yeah, its in the corner house. though from passing and looking in their still using shuttle SN45G's (nForce 2, socket A jobbies)

i used to go to one years ago now out at the megabowl here called lan arena. spent many hours playing RA2 with my friends lol. and the place was almost always empty so we always ended up getting longer than we payed for as the guy tht ran it always played RA2 with us lol

I think it has since closed down??

but they are great fun with a group of ya :)

EDIT: also i agree with sup3rc0w's comment below lol. even i feel too old for them now

That was the place I went to in Nottingahm. It was about 7 or 8 years ago now :)

yeah same here. used to go almost every saturday. but now days it's gone and the whole megabowl tends to be full of chavs :( its like skeggy all squashed into 1 building :D

Looking at previous LAN centres and the fact that they mostly tend to go out of business, I'm guessing that the answer is no, sadly :/

I've considered setting one up in the past but given the overheads, it's pretty hard to imagine how you'd be able to run one and not make a huge loss, let alone a profit. For the time being, I'll stick to BYOC LAN parties :)

Gaming centres can be good crack, when theres an allnighter or tournaments.
but in my experience the rest of the time theyre full of 8 year olds playing wow. its a disturbing sight.

LAN centres were very popular in Asia back in 2000 / 2001 and they were everywhere, but now the hype is over most of them went out of business. I used to go there a lot with my mates at the weekend for some CS1.3 action. You could also order food and drinks there too... oh happy days...

Nope. Not really seen any around here though, but I wouldn't go anyway. The nearest thing I've seen is the little LAN they have in the Laser Quest in Swindon, but it's naff.

I play in a clan so we have our own LAN parties every few months... much more fun, especially during the summer months and you can stoke up the bbq at 3am for some nosh in between gaming sessions :D

People dont lan for better pings.

Actually, some do. There's a big Quakeworld LAN in Sweden (www.qhlan.org) every 6/12 months which people all over Europe travel to so they can play some hardcore quake under perfect and fair conditions.

Admittedly, it's much less common now but as a relatively young gamer you may have missed out on the late 90s LAN scene. Back then almost nobody had a broadband internet connection and I went to a couple of gaming netcafes (Shoot'n'Surf and Egomaniacs) in 1999 and 2000. One of those occasions was for a big european match when my clan leader and I wanted a decent ping and voice comms. The Playing Fields and The Bad Place (named after dm4!) were other popular London venues.

Of course, a lot of people tend to play up the social side of LAN parties but at the end of the day, when I used to go to LANs it was for the gaming first and foremost. Much cheaper and easier to socialise with 'real' friends :)

To answer the OP: no, not any more - last time I went to a LAN centre was 2001.

that place not look kinda out of place next to all the "exotic bars" around there? :p

I might go round there some time with a few friends for an afternoon, but it's more fun just going to one of our bigger flats and playing there I find.
