My fabulous ship
Ahoy!
I have inherited a lot of land in Iran (I'm half Iranian) and to go, I need the deeds transferred in my name, which is where the concern comes in...

Being half Iranian, Iran doesn't recognise dual nationality, ontop of that I haven't done the 2-3 years national service (nor do I intend to), I haven't been there since I was 14 (34 now) and I am worried that I will either be put into the army or taken by the national guard for no reason (this happens a lot).

My cousin went 2-3 years ago and was ok, but I don't speak the language, my only iranian relative (out of many) who speaks english wouldn't be with me most of the time (uncle) and I honestly don't know if I would be fleeced or not....

I would get an iranian solicitor to do it for me, but I have to go over there to claim the land as anyone who doesn't visit Iran for 3 years loses all land / money / etc...

wouldn't you be better finding some sort of Iranian expat forum, as its really down to the risk, and i doubt any on here will know that.

How much land, might it have oil under it?

If there were any sort of value under the land (water / gas / oil) you can guarantee the government would take it off me the moment I found it.

It is a lot of land.

I suppose I will look for these expat forums... this is all new to me so not looking forward to sorthing this mess out

A guy I worked with some years back told an interesting story. When he was at university (in the UK) his best mate went "home" with his parents for a holiday to visit relatives. Unfortunately he was detained by the authorities and conscripted and shortly after was killed in the Iran Iraq war.

So yes, nothing at all to worry about.

If you said Syria i'd be like nahhhh blud too hot 4 me.

But Iran you'll be ok. Just claim it then sell it.

Edit: The national service thing though........... yeah may be a problem. Like others have said just get a solicitor or something.

Wait can't you get the solicitor to sort it and sell within 3 years? I mean you've only just inherited it so have some time.

Is money worth your freedom?

Are you struggling so much you need the money?

Do you have an emotional connection to the land?

If you answered yes to the above 3 questions, then go claim it.

If not, steer clear.. Perhaps see if a solicitor can represent you in Iran.

I know an Nigerian attorneys at lores who acts on behalf of a lot of Princes who are have many monies dollars in holdings, if you wire me a nominal sum to be agreed I can pass his detail on as he would most likes to make connections in areas of middle eastern.

On a serious note I definitely think this is the wrong place to ask as you need expert advice on the issue, it sounds mighty complicated and carries a fair amount of risk.

A shame you cant get someone to legally act on your behalf over there, I wouldn't be heading back! If the land is worth money then who's to say you wont be detained for some made up reason and the land seized? I'm not in any position to advise you, but to me it puts a target on your back!

is there not some dude on here that travelled to all these weird and delightful places and did 'holiday' tours in the same funky areas (north korea being one and I'm sure fairly iran was another) perhaps he can give a bit of advise?

I'm sure his travels involved great experience in Iranian conveyancing law.
you're sure? even better. I'd suggested him as he may have contacts he could have possibly sent the OP in the direction of but seeing as you know he has great experience of Iranian conveyancing laws we have a result.

I can't give it to a solicitor yet as the land isn't in my name until I go over there, Iranian law requires the land owner to be in the country once in a 3 year period, so at the moment it's defaulted to my mothers name as she has been in the last 3 years. and even then I am lucky that my dad didn't leave a will otherwise I would have lost it straight away.

We don't know how much it's worth, only that it's a lot of land in multiple locations, majority in ghayen, a lot in vorezg, a couple of villas (villas in iran are not that good :p)

unfortunately it sounds like a lot but the currency conversion is terrible.
