Why is it called a space walk?

I don't think it is. NASA seem to suggest that it's one word - spacewalk - just like spaceship and spacesuit. My browser dictionary, however, isn't so sure.

Failed to find an etymology for it either - except that it apparently originated from 1965 (which makes sense, because that's when the first spacewalk happened).

It's times like this when I need an OED subscription, but not at that price!

In response to the OP - Yes (but only if I was a lot fitter than I am), and no (chicken!).

Closest I'll get is the shuttle launch simulator (at KSC) which, despite initial trepidation, I loved and rode several times.
