So I am speaking to this guy in work about plans for new years day and he says he'll probably just put a joint in the oven on 150 and go for a long walk . He said he would just leave the house empty and come back to almost cooked dinner.

Personally I am scared in case the oven would have a fault and house could burn down or in my case flat.

So are you happy to leave the house while your meat heats? And what about basting ? Surely it's going to want the odd baste every hour or so.

I would personally, we leave other electrical things running whilst out or away on holiday (fridges etc)

I'd have no problem doing it, in 25 years ones never set light to the house while I've been in it.

To be honest any appliance has the ability to create a fault and burn the place down. An oven isn't any difference but it isn't somthing to worry about unless you're importing/buying low grade goods.

As to leaving meat in there never! It would be bone dry by eating time :(

Most home insurance is invalidated if the 'main' appliances (oven, hob, washer, dryer) are left on whilst you are not in your home and develop a fault.

Thats enough to put me off doing it.

Not if you do it right. My slow cooked pork shoulders are more moist than an ex-pat in a Thailand tranny bar.

That's not in my agreement

If that were true they could argue that unless it was switched off at the wall then it is powered on. They'd invalidate so many claims.

Arrgh slow cooking :D I neglected that approach. By far the best way to do it. I have yet to find anything that doesn't taste better slow cooked

Do it all the time, how else do you slow roast something?

Anything could develop a fault, do you unplug TV, fridges, disconnect gas at the mains? Nope

The only things left plugged over night are the fridge and Sky box. Everything else is unplugged.

What you need is a bed time routine, or am I showing my age.

Slow cooker ftw.

Turn on. Go to work. Come home to stew. Mmmmmmmmm

Agree best time saving investment I've made all year. And the food that comes out of it is just amazing. A good winter stew is always a good favorite.

I wouldn't leave anything big on, I get nervous enough about leaving a lamp on for the cats when I'm out in the evening.

When I was growing up sunday lunchtimes were always about going to the pub for a couple of hours whilst dinner was in the oven.
