Would you RMA this?

Hi guys,

I've had my 8800GT since they were launched and like others I've had the problem with temperatures. I'm now unable to play anything without fan speed being on 65% otherwise it locks up and I have to force reboot. Question is... is this out of the ordinary for this card? Or is it common? I need to decide if I'm going to RMA you see.

Your thoughts please :)

I'm afraid it's pretty normal, the card seems really unstable. I've given it to my brother since i'm not gaming currently and thankfully he isn't having problems with it but it really got hot in my system. Added to that, the fact that the fan makes all that noise makes it quite annoying.

if you dont want to try changing the thermal paste and voiding the warranty i would RMA if it if isnt working correctly
Remember to provide proof though or they may charge you for restocking and testing

Does 8800GT require a lot of power, I know of someone who is running it on a 350w psu and is having fps problems, its worse then a x1950pro he says

My PSU is 550W Antec. Got an overclock on my E6600 but other than that I have more than enough power for this. What is strange though is that if I run Crysis with fan speed at 50% it works fine no crashes but if I play UT3 with it at 50% it will crash. Perhaps UT3 is demanding much more of my system??

I would say its because U3 engine is better programmed than the cry engine 2 and thus it utilizes your graphics card more fully whereas crysis seems to just bottleneck everywhere.

Proof of this theory would be that in Bioshock both my CPU and GPU run hotter than in crysis, indicating neither of them are being fully utilized in the latter.

Yeah perhaps what you are saying is true, I've just been playing UT3 at 60% fan speed and it locked up after about 20minutes of play. I had to force reboot. Such a pain in the neck this problem.. a friend of mine has the same card (Point of View) and his plays UT3 without having to modify fan speeds!

Streeteh: What you say is definately true. I just played Sherlock Holmes the Awakened for an hour or so with no fan modification (default: 35%) and no lock-ups at all. So it goes to show that UT3 must utilize the card much more...

What brand of card do you have? Check the manufacturer website to see if there is a new card bios update. I updated my leadtek 512mb 8800gt and the temperatures dropped significantly, not sure of exactly what it did to reduce temperatures but it hasn't made the fan noisy. I didn't really have any problems with the high temperatures either though.

So I would check for a bios update, and if there is none of it doesn't help you should see if you can RMA it, whether it's common or not for the card it seems unacceptable.

Hmm I can't see any bios updates on that website either unfortunately :(, I thought the better manufacturers would have released an update as the overheating seems to be quite widespread with the oldest cards especially. I would RMA it then if I were you, I know it's a pain sending it off but if you try replacing or just reattaching the heatsink and fan you would void warranty.

I'm led to believe altering fan speeds void warranty also! :(

I've emailed to see if they have a BIOS update available. Otherwise I'll be considering a RMA, I might choose one with 'the better cooler' this time.

Don't worry about voiding warranty if you've only been altering the fan speed through windows in ntune or rivatune etc. It's not as if you can really do any damage or that they will be able to tell anyway. I didn't think that doing that would void warranty anyway .

Yeah I though that was a little odd too, harsh.

Hardware customization, modification or alteration of the products as delivered will cause the warranty to void. Software customization (over/underclocking, fanspeed changes, bios modification) is treated as customer self damage and will void your warranty. Also damages caused by other computer hardware (such as the mainboard, powersupply etc) as well as physical damages (caused by the user) are not treated as warranty. Please contact you retailer for more information about voiding your warranty by customer self damage."

It would be hard to practically do hardware damage by lowering the fanspeed I think. The gpu gets too hot it freezes or resets and then no further harm is possible.

Its volts not heat that damages isnt it, what temp is a gpu good for?

As soon as i got my BFG 8800GT OC2, i removed the factory headsink/fan, and replaced it with the, Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 VGA Cooler and a Scythe S-FLEX 800RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 pin, completely silent (well for fan standards) havent seen my temps go above 38c whlist playing crysis and the fan is only running at 600rpm, the best £15 ive spent in along time!!

Sounds normal to me.
