Would you RMA your PSU ?

Cutting a long story short, bought a new mobo and pulled a brand new Corsair AX860 PSU out of its box.

But my none of my 4 drives were recognised even at the bios level, so thought that perhaps i had a bad mobo.. Cos all four drives couldn't possibly be killed (oh how wrong was I) Anyway this sent me on a wild goose chase.. Tried switching peripheral cables over, even ended up switching over power supplies to a known working one.. None of which helped. Said to myself bad luck bad mobo and done an RMA.

Got new mobo next day, same thing, so said to myself this cannot be true... are all of my drives dead........ ?? And yep tried the drives in a different machine, and they too were also dead... just to confirm this, I took a good drive to my new rig, and with my fingers crossed, knowing that it possibly was going to kill it too, i fired up. and it worked and was immediately recognised. Now have plucked up the courage and have three new drives in there. Actually in the middle of restoring all my crap.

However the fact remains that this 'new' psu somehow killed ALL of my drives, here's the proof.

But its working now and well, and i have backups of all my important stuff thankfully !

Question is was i just unlucky and something wasn't properly plugged in and arc'd ? Really scratching my head on this one... Clearly something horrible went down... Been building PC's since the 90's, and know what i'm doing, so always take extra care when working inside a machine... Didn't take any short cuts... Just plugged everything in and fired it up... old mobo was probably fine all along but the wild goose chase sent me down the wrong path.

My psu is modular, and its possible that they were originally plugged into a different peripheral outlet. Not going to chance it by trying the others.. The two i have in there now are working a treat..

If you were me, would you RMA the PSU ? thing is this PSU was an RMA for an 3 yr old Corsair AX750, that decided to stop working after 3yrs.
 
If you haven't already done so, submit an RMA for that PSU and have it replaced. As for the drives that might have gotten affected, when you submit an RMA, let them know that you have a good reason to suspect that it the PSU caused the damaged. They ask you to send the PSU and drives back for failure analysis. If found during evaluation that it was indeed the PSU, you will be compensated for those drives. I'm sure that our RMA team will get you sorted out in no time.

And there's NOTHING wrong getting another Corsair PSU, it might have been just a bad unit to begin with, which is very rare for an AX unit.

Maybe I've been unlucky, well not maybe but almost certainly.

My original AX750 was faulty, caused me to have to do an RMA on the mobo, after frying it. Anyway that one worked great for 3yrs, then died on me.. thanks to the 7yr warranty, they replaced it with the AX860, which subsequently fried all four of my drives. Anyway that one is on its way back to Corsair for an RMA, and they may even compensate me for my drives. I said throw me an RGB mechanical kb my way and we'll call it good. don't know if they'll take me up on the offer mind !

I'm kinda in bed with them as all three of my pc's (1 for me and 2 for my kids) all have Corsair AX PSU's and memory... So i may as well stick with them. until theyre out of their 7 yr warranty. and die on me.

I should also add, i'm as careful as careful can be with static and only ever plug my pc's into a surge protector and ALWAYS discharge myself of any static before i do anything... So its not like i'm on the floor playing twister then go do carpet skids, before touching my components.
 
Only Corsair units atm worth looking at are the AX, others are quite poor for the price compared to cheaper /+ better units, and even AX are often overpriced

However, hopefully Corsair should sort you out with a replacement
 
Make sure you tell Corsair about your 4 drives damaged by PSU then they will give you Corsair Damage Claim form, after they received form by email with receipts and pictures then they will approved your RMA and sent your PSU with 4 drives to Corsair. They now have new UK RMA base in Bolton, if they approved your RMA addressed to Netherlands then you need to ask Corsair to change RMA to Bolton.

I'm in the US, but yes sent the pcb boards for the 2 HDD's and just sent them photo's of the SSD's burnt... Not sure i want to send off my HD's with all my entire life's contents on them to god knows who / where. Hoepfully they'll accept the pcb boards as proof... if not, oh well.
 
Apologies for the hijack... but my HX650 recently went bang and I've sent it off for an RMA. I do not have another PSU to test until the replacement arrives but if it turns out that the PSU took other components with it, where do I stand with those??

I would like to think you would be covered but would be good to see what the corsair rep says
