Would you sell a car knowing there was something wrong with it?

would you?

i am convinced some people put things like 'slight loss of power when accelerating, needs new plugs?' knowing full well, that the head gasket is knackered.

is it better to be completely honest and take a slight drop in price, or see what you can get away with?

what is your experience of buying or selling privately?

Depends on what type of person you are really.. honest or dishonest.. as simple as that

depends if a normal person would know about it, ie if you can feel or see it without taking the car to bits. I usually give the exact details but not always.

My last two cars I sold through eBay and I made sure I listed everything KNOWN about the vehicle fault wise.

Last thing you want is a buyer coming back to you with a Court Claim, mind you in saying that, if your a private seller, then the buyer hasn't got a leg to stand on anyway.

Honesty is the best policy tbh .... for me anyway.

Unless it would make the car explode then no. That's why you write 'Sold as seen' on the receipt.

*n

to an extent i agree, ive sold some right basket cases in my time however i am pretty sure i read something not that long ago about " sold as seen" and that the purchaser now has a lot more rights. i.e sold as seen means jack if the car is defective and youve not told the buyer

in all seriousness if you sell a whooper and the next day a wheel falls off for instance im sure thell find a no win no fee monkey to sue you.

I sold my Rover Coupe with a dodgey water pump. Told the guy who bought it from me, and he sounded like he was going to replace it himself.

i thought "sold as seen" meant just that, if they then buy the car then they are accepting all responsiblilty for any faults on it, it then becomes there tough luck for not spotting a fault.

I personally wouldn't sell a car without listing any known faults unless it's a minor one e.g. a Fiesta rattling, but as i've traded in al my cars or had it written off by some chav that nicked one of them. If i'm trading a car in then i don't care, they'll be selling the car for 2/3 times more than they paid me for it anyway :p

I tell 'em everything. Why make life complicated for yourself and your buyer.

What goes around comes around as well, if you're not careful...

No, I wouldn't (and indeed haven't. It was the main reason I didn't sell my VTi privately)

If I know the car's got problems, I'll trade it in rather than sell it privately. I feel no guilt if a garage doesn't spot the problems, because they are trained and aware. With a private sale, I feel it's not nice to try and pull the wool over someone's eyes with lies or misleading comments. With the garage I give them the keys and say "what will you offer"

It's all well and good saying sold as seen and buyer beware, but that doesn't mean it's a nice thing to do to someone. We have seen people on here who are upset at having been ripped off or mislead...

It's also worth noting that even as a private seller, you cannot lie to the other person if asked a direct question.

Yes but I have always told the person what exactly was wrong with it to begin with.

Spot on.

I also encourage them to check the car over thoroughly, i even offer them the use of my trolley jacks and axle stands.

I just feel guilty if i sell someone a lemon, and its not good for your rep either.

The guy selling me my vRS was sure to put that the car was sold as seen and tested on the reciept he gave me, and the one I signed for him to say I'd taken posession of the car. Maybe I missed something wrong with it (bar the fact the backbox looks like its about to drop off :o ) :p

When selling my 306 I was as honest as I could be but I didn't go out of my way to tell them about every little squeek and rattle that the car occasionally gives off. TBH most people looking at it told me more about what was wrong with it than I knew myself :o

I sold my Fiat Coupe 20VT with a "leaky-seals" turbo and out of line tracking. They guy even saw these faults and still didnt say anything even though I pointed them out. When he saw the amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust he just said "condensation", even after I said "the turbo smokes as the decat loosened the seals". He didnt try to knock any money off either!

I'm always very honest and point out anything major or that i think will need doing coming up.
I was ripped off by someone. In a way it was partly my fault as i trusted them to do the trestdrive etc as i hadn't sorted insurance. All previous people i had bought from were nice and genuine.
litterally went and filled it up, about 5 minutes driving and low oil pressure buzzer was on. Clutch release bearing started to get noisy as well as it warmed. I should have realised he was driving it like a total granny.
I went back to him but he wouldnt accept it. Personally if it was me and id just sold someone a car 20 minutes ago i would take the car back if they were as un happy as i was.
So being on the other end i'd never be dishonest.
