Currently running a 3770k @ 4.6ghz. Had the upgrade itch for a while and as of yesterday have been offered a 5960x, ASUS X99 Deluxe and 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX for £700. Seems like a steal for components that are only a few months old, a 5820k setup with the same motherboard and ram would cost more brand new.

After the sale of current components it would be a <£500 upgrade and likely last me for the next 5 years unless we see a significant CPU performance boost.

I would ask myself if its such a steal then why is the person selling it?
Your set up atm is pretty decent ,, do you play games much ? if so then what GPU do you have ? ,, screen ress do you play at , also i take it you have a decent sized SSD.

He's downgrading and is looking for a quick sale, everything has been seen working.

Gaming is probably my biggest use but I'm also running VM's as well as messing about with photo and video editing.

I know I don't need this upgrade really for my uses but it would be nice to play around with some new toys.

Do it, have you seen how much 3770/k go for on *bay now, still a premium and z77 boards are very rare, people still after them and go for top dollar, I wanted a new one to replace my low end z77, coudln't find anything at a sensible price. Sell it all seperate, bundles wont get you near same money back.

At that price, most definitely buy imo. Absolute bargain. And if you wanted to you could probably just sell those components off and make a quick buck if you fancy that instead.

Ayahuasca if the person selling it to you can be trusted then yes grab it and make sure to get the original purchase invoice for warranty reasons and make sure this person will help also with warranty if the supplier will not honor the warranty as it was sold on to someone else and not their original customer.

Also you have a 2nd option as you know there is a 5820k being sold on the MM. What worries me when buying 2nd hand cpus and motherboards, is they may have been damaged by the owner by either installation or overclocking with silly volts, CPUs sometimes don't show faults right away even the Intel Diagnostic tool I have found to miss a few faulty CPUS in the past.

SO the real question is can you trust this person ? if so go for it, if not I would rather trust davido_labido in the MM and try come to a deal for his CPU and then grab a new motherboard and new RAM 2666 16gb.

Total about £500, then sell your current gear should net you back £250 and then it's a £250 update that will be perfect for gaming, which is your main use and still will be fine for the other tasks you do. Also remember overclocking a 5820k and 5930k to higher speeds is easier than a 5960x and easier on the cooling. Do you have a good CPU cooler at the moment ? The saved money can go into a new graphics card that will make gaming better. ( What are the full specs of your current rig? )

As you know I was in the same boat and in the end gave up and went new, less risk and headaches. Then I will wait it out till Broadwell-E 10 cores come crashing down in price and grab one from someone trusted 2nd hand or from CEX with a 2 year warranty from them OR by that time something new maybe be out that makes the 10 core look silly for the same price of a 5930k today or a 5820k.
