Would you use a bulldozer chip?

At the price they are now its really hard to get better for your money , especially new, however it needs pairing with a good motherboard with good vrms, the 8 core bulldozers throttle badly on cheap boards.

Is that because of the power draw, I heard they are quite toasty chips

I really wouldn't get a bulldozer chip. Especially for £90

Save your pennies for something good.

Look at my sig mate, it's not for me. What I was asking was is there anything that's better value for money than a £90 8 core chip, I'm going to see him to see if he's will to get something second hand from the MM (if there is anything at the time)

I hate to agree because I hate the FX chips, but given the cheap prices now of decent 990X and 990FX boards, and the cheap price of the 8320/50/70... it's not a bad purchase for a budget build.

Got a FX chip myself and only thing I'd recommend now is get one of the newer boards.

I think it's the new revision of the 990FX Sabretooth that has USB 3.1 and even M.2

The 83xx chips aren't bad at all for the money, especially when overclocked (4.4GHz or so should be easy). Of course Ryzen 3 is going to be better, but I think that's not until the second half of this year.

I'd check benchmarks but I believe that when paired with a low-end GPU, the G4560 is better than an FX8300 in most games. Having said that, the Bristol Ridge suggestion is pretty good due to the upgrade path but I thought they were OEM only? Is your friend planning on upgrading over the next couple of years or are they wanting the system to last for longer on its own? With a £500 budget a separate GPU is probably not going work, unless buying used.

FX8xxx series are excellent for the money at the lower end, but ensure you have a direct tap into a nuclear power station to keep it going.
