...blow 2-3k on a new rig right now if you had the option, or would you wait?

I've got ~3k sat in the bank and ive been waiting to scratch... but everything seems so dissapointing.... Haswell temps, 780 costs etc.

Im in desperate need of a new rig, but im really struggling to pull the trigger.

To answer your question, yup, i suspect its a great upgrade over my current system which I havent done anything with since 2009. (i7 920 Nehalem @ 3.8, ATI Radeon HD 4870x2 2048 etc).

Should i just do some cheap cpu/gpu upgrades and get a whole new rig next year? Or just go for it now and blow the lot on a 4770k SLI 780's, WC etc)?

Advice please peeps.

***edit: I have ssd.

Get an ssd if you haven't already and upgrade the graphics. There is plenty of room for improvement with your current rig yet without spending a fortune on a whole new PC.

That said if you wait for the 'perfect upgrade' you will be waiting forever - as it will never come. If you are a gamer (which I suspect from your system specs you are) Haswell is a big upgrade from what you have in raw power but compared to a new graphics card the performance difference it will offer in a lot of games will be minimal.

Personally I would wait a little while for the prices on the new stuff to settle, wait for any bugs / board revisions etc to appear and then upgrade closer to the end of the year.

As said above, it would be daft if new stuff was imminent, but GTX7xx and Haswell are out now. Go for it. On the flipside, I'm still more than happy with my rig. I only really play Mass Effect and a heavily modded skyrim. i2500k at 4.2Ghz and GTX670 is nice :D Tempted to pick up another GTX670 for sli though :D

Much like the OP's situation but I have progressed mine to placing an order.

had a 920 since the 09 release and it has served me well but I do suspect that my motherboard is beginning to fail or is simply not capable of sustaining the 4ghz clock anymore. Audio stutters and locking, blue screens every few weeks or so.

First new addition last year was going from a crossfire 5770 to a single 670 Gigabyte card which helped a lot a few weeks later and an SSD was added along with an additional 8gb of memory taking me up to 16. Which were all really good but since early this year I have started having issues as mentioned I believe its the board as it has seen a pretty solid online time since build plus the board wasnt exactly top draw (AsusP6T)

So today I hit the order button for a 4770k and Gigabyte Z87 D3HP which is actually reviewing very well and promising some decent wiggle room for the price. As an additional treat I ordered up a white BitFenix Shinobi as the blue/white colour scheme compliments the black/blue board well along with the blue PSU fan should end up with a shiny pure rig. Hopefully all up and running this time tomorrow. Fortunately because of previous upgrades my new build prices me under £500 but going from gen1 to gen4 will make me one of the bigger winners on upgrading.

As for temps I know the same drama circulated around Ivy but that didn't stop people consistently posting 5ghz clocks on Air and average closed loop cooling solutions. I suspect there are some additional, currently not well utilised goodies inside Haswell that will start proving themselves in the next couple of months. Given how my boards behaving I will be up shi- creek if it dies anyways as 1366 boards are available pretty much no where.

So you don't think it's worth at least waiting for amds response this year before spending the 2-3k, considering the negativity flooding the community over CPU heat and gpu price?
