Well this was a fun one. I had a system back today for a repair. It is an system that is about 7 years old (3770, Z77, FirePro V5900) and was, until recently, working ok but started to have issues with data corruption and not booting.

So I powered on, no display, reseated the GPU, no display, checked the PCIe slot, no contamination or damage. So I thought, I wonder if I have a old PCI display card. One of my colleagues found a 20 year old S3 Virge… Installed, powered on.. and it still works.

I know there are some people that have been building old school retro PCs with AGP etc but it still astounded me that this card worked and displayed etc.

Anyone else running ridiculous old GPUs in a system?

Good old S3 Virge, remember buying an extra 2MB chip to plug into one so I could get blue water on the original Tomb Raider :D

Ha my very first card was an S3 Virge DX, good enough for Quake 1 while I saved up for a Voodoo card :)

I have a Matrox Mystique (Original) and a Matrox G200 Marvel, both PCI versions, sitting in an old machine at the moment. So they've been going strong for a long while now. The Mystique is from 96/97, so that's 22/23 years old now. The G200 was from 5 odd years later than than the Mystique, so I'd say around 17/18 years now. So yeah, have some hardware that's still going strong. :)

Got a RIVA 128ZX (the Diamond Viper one in that link) kicking around somewhere :D Used it as a 2D card along side a 3DFX Voodoo 4MB
