Did anyone else here like me use to update their addons with wow matrix?
I dunno if anyone has been following this whole saga but basically been going like this.

  • WowMatrix comes out which allows users to pretty much update all their addons with 1 button click
  • Curse gaming see's people are not going to their site and bring out their own version to update addons. However, the program is not as good and the vast majority stick with wowmatrix
  • Blizzard becomes much stricter with addons and stops addon authors from charging for addons, putting spam messages in their addons, stuff like this.
  • Some addon authors get annoyed and threaten to stop updating their addons.
  • Addon authors contact wowmatrix as they are not getting any donations via them.
  • Wow Matrix eventually adds the ability for authors to get donations via their program.
  • Curse change their client to only allow all addons to be updated at once for premium users (i.e. pay to update all at once). Largely in part I suspect due to blizzard changing the T&C's.
  • Addon Authors tell wowmatrix to stop hosting their addons (main popular addons, not all though)

Which brings us into the current situation. Although please note my timeline above may not be exactly in the right order.

Wowmatrix was very easy to use and on patch days you could update your addons in about 5 minutes (slow speeds) compared to hours of trying to updating manually via overloaded websites.

To those of you that use a lot of addons and update your addons what are your thoughts on this?
I am personally annoyed with wowmatrix for not supporting authors sooner but, I am more annoyed with curse for trying to charge for this.
I really think blizzard needs to come down a lot harder now and make it so that no-one can charge for any thing relating to addons but, I know this will be unlikely and hard to enforce.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
What do you currently now do to update your addons?

I've not been following it, but my understanding was that the main beef was that wowmatrix didn't actually host the addons themselves and was basically leeching the files from the other sites?

Or have I got it wrong?

Best one I ever used was WoWACE. ACE2 addon were fantastic, although i think a lot of them are now Curse. Either way doing it yourself is easy enough, or just use Curse. It doesn't really make any difference

I haven't played WoW since last November.

I always used to update all my add-ons manually. I wouldn't trust an automatic jobbie.

About three of my add-ons are must haves. I wouldn't play WoW without them. I would be more than happy to pay for them. Several are very good and I would pay to use them if necessary. Some are just for fun and not worth paying for.

Addon authors come and go, and the reason is almost always connected to their WoW account status. So you buy an addon, the author quits WoW and it breaks on the next patch. (Worse case scenario I know).

Regardless of that though, there is no way in hell I'd ever pay for an addon.

Curse Client user here too, never had a problem with it. So what if you have to update one add-on at a time, after all it's only one click of the mouse.

I believe Curse and WowInterface got annoyed that wow matrix was basically leeching off their bandwidth whilst bypassing their ads/revenue streams.

Fair play really, it costs money to host files like that and i can imagine that wow matrix was losing them a lot of income.

Nothing wrong with the curse client really, wow matrix might have been slighter easier but it doesn't make a big difference really. The curse client isn't a wow add-on so i don't think it's got to conform to the wow T&C's, and so they're ok to charge for it.

WowAceUpdater was very good, but the person(s) who created and managed that were hired/teamed up with Curse to create the Curse Client (as Curse were pretty much subsidising all of the WowAce file servers). The Curse Client is pretty good actually, the whole premium business isn't great, but I can't ever see Blizzard being able to stop them charging because it isn't an addon for WoW, it is a program that provides a service (which happens to be updating your WoW addons for you). WoWInterface are now rolling out their own update, called "MMOUI Minion", which provides almost exactly the same service as the Curse Updater. There will be a premium version, but the good news is that the only difference between this and the standard version is that the adverts will be removed (which means if you don't want to pay, you can still update all your addons with one click!).
