This weekend I have decided to stop playing wow, I know there has been many threads on this, but I didnt want to troll old threads. This time it will be the last time I quit, as I deleted my level 70 before quittting. It stung, and will do for some time.

Myself I have a very addictive personality, especially when i game gets to the endgame. WOW went fine the first time I rolled a character to 70, but soon the Bgs become a grindfest, there were also a lot of immature players, gulde expect you to play 20 hours a week before you get 1 purple item it all got a bit too much. Dont get me wrong its a great game, but after 3 70s theres now not enough to keep me there. The main reason I need is mainly becuase it has hold of my life too much, whilst I was hoilday I had been spending at least 6 hours per day. I hate the feeling that it is spinning out of control. To sum up I think I have burned out on it.
I am concerned that if I start another MMO I may go down the same road. I played EVE online for almost 2 years and that nearly took over, although it was never as bad as WOW for this, before this I played EQ2. Unfortunatly at the time I played it with RL people at work and this never worked out.

I now have my sights set on LOTRO, The graphics engine seems really nice, I hope there will be enough PVP, and the correct balance of content to keep me going for a while. I m gonna have to download the trial and see what its like there is no way for me to judge it entirely be reading reviews. An addition from what I have heard LOTRO is more group friendly, I dont always feel like grouping and play at 2AM in the morning when I get back from a night shift.

For WOW fanboys in here, I am not dissing WOW in any way. (Pulls out the flame retardent blanket).3 years seems to be the average lifespan for me playing an MMO, is this normal ? I would like to know if anyone else has had the same expierence?

Good for you.
Personally ive never felt any appeal to 'end game' or getting the best items in a game. I think WoW suffers from people forgetting what gaming is about and getting far to serious.

I love the early levels in any mmo or rpg, having basic weapons and making the best of what you can get your hands on i.e a + 1 strength item is dam good going.

I hope AoC wont be full of elite WoW'ers (or to be more to the point elite 'mmo'ers') making everything hectic.

EDIT: Ill add that i really enjoyed LOTRO, and although i have heard, many times, that the Shire quests are widely seen as boring (possibly by elite WoW'ers ;) ) I really enjoyed them, infact the rest of the game didnt compaire to the Shire in my opinion.

But in saying that WoW always seemed to be a bigger place to explore, and exploring is what i like best!

Unfortunately your story is very common. It's a great game if you can control yourself, but I've come across a lot of people who can't. I actually left my guild a couple of days ago because I was starting to get that feeling of pressure from several members when I decided to cut back on raiding for a couple of weeks. One guy told me that I was a "slacker" because I didn't have hundreds of badges and didn't want to go to Kara/ZA/heroics when I was already raiding 5 nights a week. Another had a huge go at me because I hadn't signed for any raids for 2 weeks, and told me that it was perfectly possible to raid for 3 hours every night and still have a life.

I don't think that way though, and I decided to just leave the guild rather than quit the game. I have another guild with a bunch of friends from uni, and to me it's more fun to run through a normal instance with them than going through MH/BT. Not everyone feels that way, but I have noticed that the guys who think you should never exit the game tend to be teenagers who still live at home.

I just started wow, however I will only play when I want to play, im not fussed on lvling as fast as possible (as some of my mates are), im enjoying PLAYING the game, running around lvl 35's monsters collecting ears and whatnot :D

I can see myself getting to 70, maybe a few times and raiding etc when I feel like it, did this in guildwars and its how I play. I know I won't go as serious/life ruining as some people seem to take it.

Anyway, playing the game through and questing is what makes it for me. Still sluggin through a field of harpies and hating every second I play (haha) and loving the +15 interlect staff that just dropped, reading the stories etc. ITs pretty annoying how every lvl 70 and its dog think its fun to gank you while you try and hand in a quest -.- (but its a pvp so hey)

It's sad that people lose sight of what WoW is, its just a game. An MMO with stories etc, not JUST the grindfest be the best like everyone else thing. Once I get bored and feel I have had a good game I wont be paying the sub, just how it goes for me :)

I just have one level 70 and find keeping him fresh pretty easy even without alts. Just get a good raid guild that goes a couple times a week, do a heroic on your off days, and it really doesn't have to encroach on your RL much at all.

I think alts are where some people lose it. I have never had the desire myself to make the 0-70 grind again (I have tried and I can't even get past level 10 without a feeling of intense nausea), but some people have an insane number of alts as well as an active main and it's clear that's where the time has started to rack up for them.

I too quit wow just last night. Gave my gold and items away, to low level's, guild and random guys. Felt good lol.

I enjoyed the game a lot, spent way to many hours in the morning playing it and now find that 2-3 hours at the weekend means im left behind on leveling, get almost no help from people in questing and find the game a waste of time now. The guild i was in kind of died, slowly, GM not on line enough, not enough people to be on when others are on and the bloody guild bank is locked down so no one can get any items, great. All in all it has lost that magic appeal it once had, and i cant bring myself to grind out levels again, nor, play for 2-3 hours on my own getting 10-20% a week.... Still, its a cracking game and with mates, very good.

Still i left and went back to EVE :) a game i find much more to my liking.

Good luck to you all still in wow, hope getting to level 80 isnt too hard.

I must say, i'm enjoying wow massivly atm, got into a good PvE guild raiding pretty much every night, But not rushing just having a laugh at it..

Its help me keep my mind off my ex. which has been good.

But at the end of the day its only a game so take it as it comes :)

I don't get this..

You're saying MMos take over your life and you're quitting WoW, yet you're already getting reading to play a new one, which is likely to do exactly the same thing?

Riiighttttt

My thoughts exactly.

Dont think the OP can see the woods for the trees.

True, it would seem odd to quit one game to go play another, but i think it may be a case of the mates you had on one game, the guys you leveled up with, did the runs until 5am have gone to another game, you feel left alone, even though there are many other players, the game just isnt the same any more.

So they tend to go to the next game where they can meet up again with the people they know from the last game.

Me, i play EVE as it plays itself when im not there, as in leveling skills up, and at the weekend, 2-3 hours is enough to have a bit of fun in the game solo or in the corp im in.

I guess it comes down to the person and their own reason. but to me, a online game is only as good as the mates you are playing with.

Very true, but he was moaning about the number of hours MMOs take up when he starts playing them, then quickly moved on to talking about the one he's got next in line?

wow never took up too much time in the early stages, the last level was the worst by far. See what Happened is when we started playing, me and some friends actually left EVE to play wow, most of the friends were in the US, however, we got the EU Copy, they had the US copy. Having started playing the EU version I didnt want to start over I had 1 hunter and 1 warrior,

After 16 months I re rolled on a US server and with a fresh account, this is what killed it, before this point there was some regulation and control. As I felt that I was starting over, as must had subconcoiusly thought i had to play catch up.

I stoppped playing wow as the new expansion is gonna come out and I dont feel there will be anything interesting, just more of the same, more catching up, I hope you can now see my reasoning, I have always been a fan of MMOS, and will never ever stop playing them entirely, however I believe that starting over a more recent one is not gonna cuase as much pressure to play. Hopefully it will be what WOW was like when I firsrt started.

This also may be a stop gap for me into Warhammer comes out. I m gonna be looking at very closes, in addtion conan. It depends if they have enough balance of PVP, PVE, etc.

It varies from person to person depending on the circumstances.

I can understand how the OP feels. I quit WoW myself mid Feb after running a raiding guild for 3 years. Due to the nature of the end game raiding, I found that raid nights were starting earlier and earlier as the weeks go by. Literally, I would have to leave work and go to the raid the second I got home; no chance of a meal or anything and these raids would run from 6:45 till 11pm 4 days a week.

Cutting a long story short, I was faced with a choice of either spending every night glued to my PC, trying to eat slices of pizza and raid or stopping. In that kind of environment there was no other options - if you're not able to raid every night of the week, it's surprising how much of a burden you suddenly become and how happy people are to see the back of you so they can get someone in who's willing to sign their life away.

So really, the people you play with and the end game objectives can heavily influence how much you play, or how much you feel you OUGHT to be playing.

Myself and a few friends from WoW are looking to start over in Age of Conan and hopefully, we won't get into that sort of situation again :)

Good luck to those who kick the WoW habit - Age of Conan is the logical choice ;)

What's the point in going to another MMO and not wanting to get addicted? It's obvious that you'll get addicted to the other MMO.

You're just switching one thing for another.

Its the pace of the game that will help, with a new game, you can learn from the past mistakes and take it easy, not do raids 6-7 nights a week, not get into work with only 2 hours kip that night.

Its a new game with new starts. Taking it easy and letting the game be a game and not the be all and end all of the life you have, which happen to 95% of all wow players.

In any MMO as you progress you start getting even more addicted. It's not just WoW.

True to a certain extent. As prevoiusly stated, it is the people and pace of the game. As pointed out, WOWs pace is fast and requires hours of raiding to get anything out of it at end game.

Im actually considering LOTRO, after looking on the forums on MMORPG.com, it has a much slower pace, there seems for PVE and well as new monster PVP. I dont know if this is going to be my thing, but I love the LOTRO genre and will be giving it a try.

Of course MMOs do require a little more near the end game, as I already stated wow used to be fine, until I had grinded 3 70s, it leaves very little other than raiding.

Some element of self control is needed, I work nights and get home at 2am, its not a job where I can sleep right away and I like to sleep about 4am in an ideal word. This leaves a 2hr time slot for me to game aafter work and chill, there is nothing better on TV at that time. Occasionly i like to watch a DVD sometimes.

I had been going to bed about 6am the last 2 weeks, one week 9am after a kara raid. This absolutly destroyed my sleep pattern. This combine with something slower pace should allow me to get my sleep back.
