I want to try the online gaming community. I am a big fan of Unreal Tournament and other FPS games, but I am looking to try something quest based, where I can build up a character, trade stuff with other players, and all that good stuff.

I tried the WoW trial, but I don't like the 3rd-person perspective at all. It just seems too difficult to move and control the player, and I really don't want to change my current FPS playing styles. But in checking out various keyboard/mouse control suggestions, it just doesn't seem like it is going to be as happy and friendly as I'm used to.

So, what other game options are out there? Preferably something with a trial so I can give it a go before shelling out CC information. I am definitely looking for something fantasy, not modern warfare or urban GTA stuff.

What's out there?

WASD, Space to jump, hold right mouse button down for mouse look, with added point & blick not similar enough to FPS for you

Play WoW with a 360 pad and JoyToKey :D

In terms of fantasy games, they do tend to be more like WoW than you think. You really should give it a good go, don't be scared off by new things. MMOs are hard things to wrap your head around, just keep at it, and try different things. RIFT has a free trial, but is basically a WoW clone, Guild Wars is pretty cheap. Wait for guild wars 2 and I think it'll be an amazing game.

It does work, I guess I just have to figure out the controls better. Takes practice, like everything. :)

Online demos look like exactly what I'm looking for. Now to find a trial version...

The only thing I can suggest is, when you do try an RPG you will find the same movement problem you encountered WoW, so here's some tips you may want to follow:

If possible, I find it useful to keybind the movement keys to WASD , W(forward) S(optional since you shouldn't be using this really), A(strafe left), D(strafe right).

Now that you got the basics out of the way if you're still struggling, try keybinding "auto-run" which will make movement much much easier for you to get used to, you shouldn't use this all the time but it's good when you have to walk long distances (key bind it to something like F1 or even R or mouse button 4), then your abilities you should want to keybind them so you can use them as fast as possible, I recommend using the keys 1,2,3,4,Q,E,R,F,C,X,Z,mouse buttons/mouse wheel,`, and then eventually when your character is higher levelled and you have more keys to assign you can also assign those keys with SHIFT and CTRL.

Don't give up! RPGs are a very rewarding genre, just takes a bit of practise/getting used to at first.

If I could recommend some starters it would be:

World of Warcraft
Guild Wars
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic 1
Knights of the Old Republic 2
Elder Scrolls Skyrim
Torchlight

Just some off the top of my head. All of those apart from Skyrim can be had for quite cheap and there's a free trial for Guild Wars and WoW.
