Thinking of rolling eaither a Priest or a Paladin for healing only.

I have a Shaman and have had a 70 Druid in the past so no need to put them into the list of options (besides there more PvP for Druid and Shammy is more Chain Heal spam).

Can someone give me some good arguments? This is usually a hot topic lately with no real outcome on which one is best.

Out of Priest or Pally I would say Priest.
Paladin has superior direct heals (more in mana consumption area though). However, a priest still has very good direct heals, heal over time spells and aoe healing spells. Plus buffing in raids as a paladin is very annoying.

Priests are the jack of all trades, master of none healer and as such are the most flexible and complex to play. Paladins are excellent single target (mainly the main tank) healer, but generally comes down to mashing a single button. Priests are also nearly always the preferred option for 5-mans.

As above. Paladin healers tend to rely on spell crit too. They're good without it, but with decent spell crit their mana lasts forever.

Yeah I agree with Priest being preffered in 5-man runs and the fortitude buff is great.

I think you nailed it when pointing out Paladins are better direct healers such as on the main tank. I tended to believe Paladins were better for there quick flash heals but as I don't know the priest class too well I had to ask because 1 spell does not make one better over the other.

I did not even know there was an AoE heal!?!?!

Is it harder to heal as a priest than a paladin in a raid?

Priests have far more healing options at their disposal that it takes a bit more thought and experience to make the right choice which doesn't really apply to a healadin.

Never really played either so I can't comment on their play styles, but priests are always in demand for PvE 5 mans, ahead of paladins.. At least in my experience

Personally i'd take a Priest first, then a Druid, and finally a Paladin for healing. As said, they're all different, but I found healing easier with a Priest than with a Druid. Paladin i've not really tried but I could see it being quite boring to raid as a healing paladin.

My first character was a paladin, really enjoyed (didn't know any difference at the time :p ), but raid healing (and buffing) was soul destroying.

Flash Heal, Greater Heal, Renew, Power Word: Sheild, Prayer of Mending, Prayer of Healing, Circle of Healing, Blinding Heal, Lightwell...

All healing abilities. Picking the right one in the right situation, especially taking into account mana conservation and threat makes the priest quite a complex but fun class.

Downside of a Priest over Pally = Cloth. In Heroics, Priests can easily be 1 or 2 shotted. Plate wearing pallies tend to have greater health and armour.

I would pick priest everytime now.

I will stick to the Priest then based on your input (and others) but mostly YOU Jokster.

You may be held accountable later on if things do not work out :p

Thanks, but dont close thread! I like all the opinions coming in here.

FWIW I have played for years as Druid, Warrior, Shaman, Rogue and partial Mage. I am familiar with basic Paladin having better hp/armor etc. Its the abilities I'm not clued up on when comparing.

I found my Priest really good fun to level as well, I certainly didn't have as much fun getting a Paladin to 20, as this is the point at which I gave up.

At the moment i'm levelling a Warlock and my girlfriend is levelling a Paladin. It's great having your own personal buffbot, tank, and healer, but I don't think she's finding it that much fun tbh.

I'd say priest healing in PvE. I currently play a Pally but used to Raid heal as a Priest.

Throwing around some HoT's and topping off with large heals is better than constantly spamming FoL.

Thinking of rolling eaither a Priest or a Paladin for healing only.

I have a Priest at 70 which I gave up on some time back as it felt utterly underpowered in the healing department, though I suspect that was down to running with a low dps group at the time.

Unless you have a specific encounter where Circle of Healing is very useful (mostly in Tier 6), Shammies are better raid healers (Chain Heal > all) and Pallies are better single target healers. As said above, Priests are jack of all trades, master of none. Stacking Pallies gives cumulative benefits with blessings, stacking Priests gives no such benefits.

As for PvP, once you get 250+ resilience, a Priest is fairly handy in group play and in more demand than Pallies I believe.

Still, I would suggest the Priest is overall more entertaining to play than a Pally healer - you just need to learn how to abuse the five second rule and chain drink mana pots. However, patch 2.4 sees significant changes to mana regen (your int benefits your spirit-based regen) which is going to help Priests immensely and may well put them right up there with the best again.
