Hi All,

I used to have an E6600, I seemed to notice both cores would be at 100% quite frequently, To be honest I was dissapointed with this compared to my previous AMD x2 4400.

Just upgraded my graphics cards to a Nvidia 8800 GTX from a 1950 XTX this week so I thought sod it and purchased a new Quad 6600.

Anyway put the Quad processor in at it runs amazingly and the difference is staggering, I'm starting to think if I maybe had a dodgy e6600 due to the fact most memebrs say there isn't a lof of difference.

I have built a lot of systems over the years so don't doubt my competancy to build systems and install CPU's heatsinks and cool properly.

I did have to do a bios update to get the q6600 working when I reinstalled Vista, I'm wondering if there could have been some BIOS changes hto improve performance on both Quads and Duals.

I notice it in both normal use and games along with obvioulsy VMware.

My new spec is

Quad 6600 GO 2.4ghz
4GB Geil RAM
BFG 8800 GTX
ABit Aw9d-Max
Creative Soundblaster Fatal1ty Pro
Logitech G15 & G5

This is probably the most powerful beast I've had, it's all running fine of a Thermal take 500w PSU which I was worried about previously

I've just went to a Q6600 from a E6600 and its certainly a little bit snappier in XP however as expected with double the cores the big difference is encoding its almost twice as fast with suitable multi threading software.

The fact you mention you noticed both cores go up to 100% on your E6600 this indicates some process has requested the usage. Its easy enough to round this down by using task manager etc. I suspect that the clean install of vista is what has cleared the CPU hungry process rather than a faulty CPU.

I'm now running my E6600 under Vista for a HTPC and CPU usage is very low and I've still to see any sign of a slow down.

Yep I would agree usually with regards to processes, I did give it a rebuild a couple of times.

Itunes was usually the one that woyuld do it but all when it wasn't running it would peak a lot, tried the usual i.e. disabling all non essentials processes and services but not much joy.

That's what made me think my chip may have been faulty.

Anyway the q6600 runs like a dream ;o)) think I was just looking for an excuse to upgrade he he.

I would say the difference in games is from your GTX and not the quad. I have just gone over to a quad from my 4300 and there is absolutely no difference at all. Obviously you will notice a difference with encoding and stuff that is multicore threaded. Sadly there are hardly any games that are multicore threaded.

you might get a slight increase in minimum fps from the quad core but nothing earth shattering ....it's all GTX :)
