You can buy them.

I know there is a "craz cat" lady in the aliance human forest (havent played for ages forget the name). I'm sure google will hold some answers of the vendors locations.

You can get other things like panda cubs etc
 
Ahhh i remember when i was playing it i found a mini dragon from a drop off one in the swamp, it was great, they were going for muchos money at the time but i wanted to keep him.
 
pet dragon, argh i am gonna have to look for that tonite when i get home now.

There are all sorts of pets you can get, from snake to a panda as mentioned.

You can also get the rabbit, a chicken and the cat.

Annoyingly you cant get a dog. :(
 
Pets as in you're a Hunter. Then no you can't train cats and chickens. Only beasts. Cats and chickens are classed as Critters.

If you just want a critter to follow you around then you can buy a cat from the cat lady in Elwyn, or a parrot from Booty bay. If you're Horde you can buy a snake too. Not come across any others, but I'm sure there are more.
 
If you do a google image search for 'WoW dragon pet' the first image that comes up is the one i had, the official name is a dragon whelp, mine was called smokey :D

You can, Kind of - there's a quest in LBRS (Lower Blackrock Spire) where you have to get a worg pup (doggy thing) in a cage and take it back to some goblin or something in BS (Burning Steppes). You then get a doggy pet as the quest reward. Also similar thing for a spider pet from the same guy.

You'd have to be lvl 52 minimum really to do the quests though.
 
You can get a chicken pet by doing the /chicken emote on any chicken around 60 times. The chicken will give you a quest to obtain some special feed. Upon completing the quest you will receive a chicken egg which when used summons your chicken pet. The quest is only avaliable to Alliance as far as I know.

When i was in school i once found a kid from a few years below at a vending machine. He kept pressing the refund button. I asked what he was doing, and apparently some older guy told him if he pressed the refund button 1000 times all the money would come out.

This sounds a bit like that.

Heh, I kinda suspected it was a joke at first, especially after doing the emote over seventy times, and receiving some rather abusive whispers telling me to "STOP ******* SPAMMING U ******* NOOB!".

best pet ive got is an "oozling" from felwood. Not wise to have it out when fighting though as its got a bad aura which reduces your defence and resistances lol. Looks like I sneezed and its following me though in ironforge ^^
 
Mechanical yetis are hilarious! Theyre really small and aggro and attack everything!

Theyre hilarious to watch beating up players and even more humiliating to lose to. But they only have 3 charges.

Theyre now craftable by engies - the non combatones methinks
