Looks pretty good to me, although I'd look at a quad as opposed to the dual i3. WOW works well with quads.

And if it's THIS CHRISTMAS, wait. The ati 6000 series out in a couple weeks (October 18th?) Prices will likely settle for christmas.

Speccing now will only give you a VERY rough idea on the future build.

When you buying?

Snooble's right about the i5, it's a massive improvement over the i3 basically for everything.

The latest on ATi's 6000 series is that it'll be out at some point in November. The GTX 460 is very powerful and competitively priced, but you will likely get better value when the new ATi cards are out.

Otherwise, system looks great- easily overkill for WoW, but I like overkill.

That is not true at all. WOW only use around two cores.

But future mmos might benefit more from Quad, if they are written to take advantage of using the extra cores that is.

Thesaff, I would recommend you changing the PSU to a decent branded one than using those value model PSU (for that system, a Corsair CX400W will suffice). And for the GTX460 768MB, switch from the Palit to MSI Cyclone. The Palit cooler with a toy like fan is known to be loud and poor at cooling.

actually, apparently Cataclysm is optimused for quad core, which will be out before christmas

I guess the question is whether it is gonna be "well-optimised" to use the extra cores fully or just "minor-tweak" for the sake of putting the label of "supporting Quad" on it...guess we'll have to wait and see.

He is a tight wad and wants me to give him the spec and price first...mmmm...long nights looking for cheaper parts me thinks.
The ATI will be definitely overkill and he would most probably have a Myocardial Infarction, if I suggest something too pricey.

Keep in mind though that when people say wait for the 6000 series, they do not necessarily mean that you should opt for a 6xxx card; they are saying that there could be price switches made by NVidia and possibly ATI to adapt to the new market force.

one things for certain. If the 6770/6750 come out at the right price points (and the latest rumors seem to suggest so), the GTX 460 is going to plummet in price.

You can actually configure WoW to work with multiple cores, there's a setting somewhere you can change. By default I believe it chiefly runs on one core, using extra cores for things like sound, but it can be reconfigured. I assume Cataclysm's changes will merely set the default to auto-detect extra cores.

update the Config.WTF file by adding: SET processAffinityMask "15".

Will use 4 cores of a quad, defualt is 3 which is dual.
Results vary, some see good improvments.

In cata beta going from a 8800gts to a 470 added nice eye candy in the form of more shadows etc, I noticed more benefit in o/c the processor to be honest, So I would definatly be thinking an o/c i5.

Any dx11 card will be nice, an update for later on would be an SSD, wow loves SSD.

Just out of curiosity, how does WoW love SSDs? I understand the loading times, but to be fair a fairly modern hard drive will not have long loading times in WoW either way. Is there something I am missing here, some other functionality that makes WoW an SSD lover?

Loading Dalaran, lich king locations and others the hdd does get raped.

I run at 3600 x 1920 at all ultra settings with 8x AA and i use 80% of my 6GB ram :P

Loading times can be from 1-30seconds depending, thats on my 2x 1TB On raid.

I tested it on my SSD and it was all instant, no loading at all But its 27GB! so back on my raid :D

Dont underestimate WOW, Need's a lot of power on ultra.
Also Cat is on its way soon which will make the graphics better and much better textures!

So continuing my line of curiousity and inquisitiveness;

I am on an i5 760, still at clock speeds. It will be overclocked when I feel comfortable in doing so, as in having done a lot more research or have a friend come and help me so that I know that I will not screw something up beyond belief. I game at 1920x1080 with a 5850.

Would an SSD actually do anything except to help with loading screens? I am obviously not going to get an SSD for WoW as such, but seeing that it is on the Christmas list it might be worth to make sure that it is big enough to keep WoW on it in addition to everything else that definitely will have dedicated SSD space. Will it help with anything actually in game? Or is it merely a convenience of not having to wait while zoning in or out?

And yes. I quite like that signature.

Yes SSD is Great upgrade

Best upgrade ever

OS loads much faster!

All the programs on the SSD are instant.. Not held back by a Spinning HDD anymore.

will make wow load faster and will reduce the ammount of ram used

I do understand that an SSD is a fantastic upgrade. That is why I want one and will probably end up indulging myself for Christmas. However, the question is whether it is worth to get a higher capacity one in order to have WoW on it.
