Just updated my motherboard bios to "965P-DS4 F6 " (Gigabyte)
What seemed a pain before i was only clocking up around 2.6ghz without running into crashes.
Now after to the update im already upto 3.2ghz which currently running stability tests at.
Id be more than happy for it to stay at this. So far my CPU is idling at 54'c and working hard at around 65'c
What can the 6600 get to on artic air safely?

On a sidenote the bios is a lot more friendly it does the voltage changes automatically ect. Much happier!

Oh dear god! BIOS controlled voltages!

65C is abit high for my liking. Set your Vcore to 1.35V, if its unstable, raise it a notch until it is.

Its really not difficult, I was doing it when I was 12...

Just completed a full small fft test is it? All ok
The CPU didnt go above 64 but kept been brought down to 60 when the cooler kicked in.
Playing games it doesnt go above 58, surely this is ok?

Where are you getting temps from? Coretemp/TAT or generic temp sensing software

Now that my cpu is clocked at 3200hz is this running about same speed as a stock
Intel Core 2 DUO Extreme Edition X6800 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.93GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-130-IN) ?

its running 270mhz faster / 9% faster than a stock X6800

Do people actually pay the £700 price tag for this CPU if its that easy to overclock a lower model?

Yep, several people on these forums have that CPU! For that price tag, I would assume Intel use the very best silicon, which would mean more headroom for overclocking, in addition to the fully unlocked multiplier.

Yes.

Many people are afraid of overclocking an expensive bit of equipment due to fear of damaging it. This is pretty hard to do these days as there are lots of failsafes built in and ususally if you do something really stupid it won't even post and all you have to do is reset the CMOS.

However, if there wasnt a market for the xtreme editions then intel would not produce them, and they offer even more OCing headroom and an unlocked multiplier for those who want to play and have the cash to do so!
