Just got my new cards installed and wow, they don't half run very VERY hot!

I am seeing temps of 75/81 at IDLE:eek:

Yes, my case is a little tight, but I was not expecting temps this high at all. Have seen 100c at load on the top card.:(

Now I know this is still within tolerances, but it's too high for my liking, as is the noise levels of the fan at 100%.

One thing I don't understand is the lower card's fan speed is 70% at 75c, whereas the top card is at 100% and 81c. WTF??

Could it just be the heat coming off the lower card warming the upper, or is the lower just a cooler running card?

Would I be better switching them around?

Any tips welcome, this heat issue is a nightmare! If I can't get it sorted without resorting to buying new cooling, then they are gonna have to be sold again.

75+ is really quite high for idle for a GTX. 50-60 would be quite fine with load reaching 85 for very intensive games, with your sli set-up and your comment about space, i doubt you could fit two aftermarket coolers in. What case do you, have would help?

On that line, a new case and/or a watercooling set-up would keep those beats nice a cool depending on the parts of course ;):D

donwload rivatuner and increase the fan speed to 59 % as i think yours is only at 35% it should shave few degrees of and the sound of fan will still be the same .
hope it helps

I have tried increasing the airflow, but it's about as good as I can get it without replacing the case, or having way too much noise.

My setup is as follows....

Front - 2x 120mm intakes (1 at the bottom, 1 in a Kama Bay at the top)
Side - 1x 80mm fan exhaust and an Antec Spot Cool hovering over the GTX's
Rear - 1x 120mm exhaust

Inside the case I have the RAM cooled with an OCZ cooler, the Northbridge and PWM's are cooled with 40mm fans and the CPU is cooled with an ACF7Pro.

Maybe I should switch the 80 on the side to an intake, but I tried that with my old card installed and it actually increased the temps. Not sure what else to try.

EDIT - case is a Jeantech Phong

Try running with the side off, depending on where it is placed in the room you might see a difference of temps with two very powerful cards like that having a lot more space to dissipate the air. If that doesn't work try taking off all the extra PCI slots off the back of your case, so the bottom 120mm fan is pushing air through your case and not waiting for the cards to suck it in? - with the case side attached

Other than that i cant think of much else sorry :(

Yup, case is the problem for sure, really isn't big enough to accomodate two G80's side by side!

Side pannel fan should be an intake as well, as then you will be supplying the cards with fresh cool air directly.

Airflow seems to work better with the side on, as I have found previously. The only free PCI slot I have is immediately below the top card, and I have fitted a vented cover to it already.

Only other possibility would be to move the hdd's up to the 5.25 bays, which means 3 brackets needed :(

Only problem with the side fan is it is much higher than the cards, more in the area of the CPU, so it wouldn't make a lot of difference to the card temps.

I think i'm gonna have to make a decision - either sell the cards again, or bite the bullet and get a new case, although I really don't have the room for a deeper one. Well, not so much the room, but it would fit with my current desk layout, so that's mean a new desk as well:rolleyes:

Seriously, just get a new better case, the one you are using really really wasn't designed for the heat output of the hardware you are using.

What do you mean by deeper? length of the case of the width of it ? either answer would be looking at the Lian li / Silverstone range for more length and better air cooling , the lian li v1000 range is v.nice for GPU cooling. Or if length us a problem maybe go for a nice cube case , you would be surprised where you could put them and still have v.nice air cooling ?

Lian Li V305
NZXT Rouge - Not a fan myself and not 100% sure it could cope with SLI
Lian Li 1000Z - I loved the older model, but the new one comes with loverly extras and is still a brilliant case for air cooling.:D

Those cases range from about 80- 140 i think, the higher being for the Lian Li

Dropped my temps accross the board by moving to a new case, an old school CM stacker, for £60 (NEW:D).

Deeper as in the case depth towards the back, not the width. I think I am restricted to around 49cm in my current desk layout.

Scratch the stacker then, 58cm deep!

Out of interest, is this space enclosed in the desk. Got a door on it?

Thermaltake Soprano should just squeeze in that space.

49.5cm deep.

Antec 900 should fit as well, 46.7cm:

My case is in a desk, but there is no door on the front.

Hex - would that case really be that much better than what I have? If so, why?

...reckon i'm gonna sell the cards, as it looks like a lot of hassle/expense is going to be needed in order to keep them :(

Under £100 isn't that expensive, not to house the system you've got.

IN9-32X MAX | C2Q 6600 G0 @ 3ghz | 4gb OCZ PC2 6400 4-4-4-15
2x EVGA 8800GTX ACS3 in SLi | 2x Spinpoint 250gb SATAII in Raid0
Spinpoint 160gb | X-Fi Xtreme Audio | Kama Bay | Samsung 206BW

Got to be worth spending a little extra.

Both the cases i've posted have a lot more space inside than your current case.

Both also have considerably more airflow (the 900 especially).

Your current case is very cramped.

The bottom 8800GTX has hardly any airflow as it is practically pressed against the bottom of the case...

The top GTX is having its airflow blocked by the PCI-E cables from the 2nd and what look to be USB cables.

There is little to no airflow from the front of the case at it is blocked (and heated by) the HDD's that are located there.
