Ok i'm thinking of getting back into WoW (no flamers please it's only for a bit of fun till i get bored of it again :p).

My question is:

Is it possible to create a character on one of the US servers using my WoW retail game bought in the UK paying a UK subscription?

I'd like to play with some american friends so if not can i download the US trial version and buy US gamecards/pre-paid CC or something to create the full version?

Cheers Gents ;)

You'll need a US account, but you'll be able to use your current discs to install the game as long as you point the game at the US login server instead of the EU one (can't remember how to do this, but I think it's in the config file somewhere).

I use to play on the US servers. You will experience horrible lag because of the distance between the servers and the time difference to raid will make it very hard for you.

Saying that yes you can instal the UK version. You will need a US Key though and set up a US registration. You can't use your UK key to create a US account.

To play as the US version there is a file in the instalation directory where you simply open it as a txt file and change it from ie EU to US.

I don't know it straight off but I will find out when I get home.

I was hoping it would be possible to play with my existing character on the UK servers and switch to my US one when i felt like it, looks like if i want to do that it'll require 2 separate subscriptions.

I have 3 options at the moment:

1. Carry on with my lvl 56 johnny no mates on Warsong.
2. Join the OcUK server and re-roll so i can play with others.
3. Join the US server with friends and play with them.

Hmmm, would be nice if they featured a guild wars style 'international district' where i can play with anyone i liked.

I had to sell my US account because I could not transfer it to EU servers. Best bet is to re-roll on the OcUK server.

1. level 56 is easy to reach now leveling is faster.
2. New people, busy/chatty guild (or so I hear), lots of people experienced and new.
3. Join friends but can you raid? have you checked how bad you will lag? I cannot stress how much lag effects gameplay especially on MMO's!

The lag will probably be pretty bad and my 2mb connection will also need to sustain the wifes msn and skype so i think that option is out, i'm loathed to abandon my lvl 56 shammie since i put so much time into him but all i ever do is run around soloing and it gets boring.

Guess it'll have to be the OcUK guild, never played with a hunter so i might go for that, hopefully the progression is significantly quicker as i've not got as much time to dedicate as i used to.

Many thanks gents.

The lag's not that bad really as long as you play on an east coast server but as mentioned above the real problem will be the time difference as far as raiding goes.

The file you want to alter is the realmlist.wtf in your wow directory.

Change 'set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com' to 'set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com'. Since I last played I notice they added another line regarding the patching server to the file so I assume you also have to change that in the manner above also.

Also take into consideration your ISP, Cable is best but if you have DSL you are much worse off.

East and West coast did not make a big difference, I was on the East side but I also had DSL as Cable is not available in my area.

It also costs more to play per month as when the money is taken from your bank account you generally get a rubbish exchange rate and a fee for the transaction/exchange of currency.

I bought my copy of WoW in the US and now want to buy the burning crusade.

Will a copy of TBC purchased in the UK be compatible with my US version?

My other option is to download the free TBC 10 day trial from the official site, and then use my UK CD key to activate it.

Would either or these work or must I find a way to buy a TBC CD key from the US?

No.

If you want to play TBC you will need to buy a US copy of the game from eBay. You can download the game from Blizzard, purchase the game from eBay and ask the seller to mail you the CD Key.

Then you can play instantly.

I played on Arthas from the US launch until the game came out in Europe at which point there was no point playing there. As far as I can remember the pings were generally ~200 which was perfectly playable but if I tried a central or west server it went up a fair bit and wasn't a fun experience. This was with Zen ADSL is that makes any difference.

The pops weren't to high at that time in the beginning. Zen provides good responses. Or so I have been told. I cant say it will be good or bad for everyone, just that they will ALWAYS be higher compared to the EU servers.

In my personal experience regarding response times, it is a big downside to raiding when you need to kick/block spells being cast.

I played SWG on an east coast server, Corbantis. Ping was generally around ~200 but it was perfectly playable. Oh and this was a 128kbs connection :( My only downfall was 512mb RAM :p Starports were a nightmare!

To be honest if you do go to the US servers, it'd probably be easier to just order some US discs, since you'd need two subs anyway.

Roll with the OcUK guys. Looks like their guild is blooming. (i did roll, but i've got too many 70's in a raiding guild :P)

The only time I have ever had problems playing any Mmorpg on us servers was with Ultima Online back in the day as that was on a 28800 modem and the american characters could actually move faster.

I played on wow US servers from beta for the first year and half and never had a problem with lag.

OOPS forgot the only pain with the us servers is raiding became a drag as doing a raid till 4 am then been at work for 7 am was tiring
