WoW - Vehicular Combat?

Surely some peoples gripes would suggest that in their view it's the opposite.

Like me, i find LOTRO far more polished and enjoyable, now all we need is a mandatory age limit of 18 for any net related activity and we're all set.

Tried LOTR (it has a free trial) and it's nowhere near as polished gameplay-wise. Graphics and looks aren't everything. The paying subscribers have voted with their wallets. The fact that it can't even overtake strugglers Final Fantasy XI says a heck of a lot.

I haven't looked up subscription numbers admittadly but i think the reason current MMOs has so many subscribers are due to their age as much as anything (yeah it's a bit of a generalisation, there must be some good features for each). My theory is that when a new game comes up, you have those early adopters, who are bored of the current game so go to the new one, those who are the wait and see type who will review and decide a bit further down the line and those who have progressed so far that they don't want to start fresh again (which makes up the majority). That's why WOW has such a large base, and then external factors such as popularity and advertising, promotions , expansions etc etc. come into play.

I didnt mention graphics, i said polished and enjoyable, that's my personal opinion. I just dont think subscription numbers are a true indication of how 'good' a game is

tried LOTRO aswell during the freebie play and the beta,
i cant say i was overly impressed with it
The gameplay lets it down too much to overlook after a while, they fixed a lot of the early problems but i cant put my finger on what it is but it was always very awkward to play for me
Maybe because i am used to games like EQ, UO, DAOC etc...

Can't disagree with you more, if it is good people will continue to pay for it (i.e. after the initial subscription if the game is not all that good they will stop subscribing)
Edit: While i agree some of the fanbase will be due to advertising, fanboyism etc.. a big chuck of it will be regular subscribers
Scary thing is i dont think wow has even peaked yet

Now lord of the rings wasn't a silent release by any means, it was quite well advertised and a lot of hype was put around it and it has a very strong fanbase so i don't think lack of advertising or fanbase can be blamed for a large chunk of the sales.
