WoW who is online without starting the game?

I had a quick search round but can't see anything, is there a way to know which of your friends are online and where without logging in to the game and checking all your characters?

I thought there might be an external program capable of seeing who is where from your WoW install.

I think X-Fire can do this, although I'm not sure as I have never used it =p

(all your friends will also need to have xfire running i believe)

There are ways you can do it using LUA mods.

It is against the EULA to use any 3rd party program that interacts with WoW from outside of the game, or for any mod inside WoW to interact with anything outside of the game (hence in game mp3 players are not allowed)

They have a program called Warden that is installed on your PC with WoW that scans for anything that interacts between windows and wow that isn't made my blizzard. It's hidden inside the launcher i believe.

The punishment of course for breaking the EULA is account suspension at the least, and legal proceedings depending on the severity of the case. although i doubt that would ever happen.

So anyway. Yes there is. Dont use them.
