A mate of mine's just won a Merc 500 SEC on the bay.

Full electric, full leather, 5 litre V8, taxed, ticketed...£1000.

Hahaha...What were they new? £60k?

It'll soon have a set of (uber-rare) polished 16x8 AMG Pentas and be sitting a LOT closer to the ground.

And its not gold btw...It is the same colour as his current W123:

Do you have a picture of these Penski?

What sort of condition car will £1,000 get you?

well if it looks anything like that example, an absolute bargain, whats the specs on that engine? its from the era when mercs were amazingly built, so im guessing it will be in a good state.

You CAN pick up a great condition car for that money, any Merc, pre 90's with a oil-refinery-addiction for crude is worth........jack all :D

However, you could also pick up one absolutely FULL of rust, so it's best to poke around ;)

Plenty of them out there though. Maintainence costs can be extortionate however - simple items like pads & discs will leave your wallet stinging a little.

A Merc 5.0 can produce up to 322BHP, and none of them are heavily stressed, never seeing above 5000RPM and any abuse sitting in front of the autoboxes.

(a 560, on Euro headers and no silencers - point made).

£1k is a bit of a bargain for that. Theres a similar one on AutoTrader near me for the same money, but the MOT has just run out....

Ah nice, yeah I recognise those. Seems that rust is the biggest problem with them. Some stunners on autotrader though going for near to nothing.

Them mercs were the first of the reasonable looking mercs and I do like them. You definetly get a lot of equipment for your money too, althought the running costs must be quite high.
