Was quite excited to see a WP7 software update, but then I realised it was just a small update and not the one that MS has been talking about for a while now. Then a few hours later I read it's bricking some phones, mostly if not only the Omnia 7!

So if you have an Omnia 7, don't bother updating to the latest version, it'll most likely cause your phone to become unusable. I have one, or should I say from tomorrow, had one. I've now cancelled my upgrade and I will be sending the phone back to Orange (I was just within the 7 day return time).

I'll wait a little longer before going down the WP7 route I think.

Has anybody managed to kill their Omnia 7 yet?

WHy have you cancelled your Omnia 7 just because a small, almost unnecessary update, could brick your phone if you decide to download it?

I think what is worrying people if its pushed automatically to the phone there is nothing you can do about it installing, I sold mine over a week a go the updates were taking too long and I lost faith in it, will look at getting one again in 8 months or so and see how its progressed.

Update: the::unwired is reporting information straight from Microsoft on how to fix a "bricked" device that doesn't complete the update, and it's deceptively simple: just pull the battery, put it back in, and turn the phone on. Failing that, perform a hard reset. Either way, the company is recommending you don't attempt the update again until the phone reminds you, which it says will happen in about three days.

Its laughable really takes them longer to roll the minor update out and when they do it causes problems on certain model phones, surely they must test these things first.

It's not a push update, its via Zune when you plug your phone in to update.

I cancelled mine because I'd like a little more time for the WP7 to bed in before I commit to a 24 month contract for an OS that hasn't yet found its feet. The recent balls up with this update has reduced my confidence in MS.
