WP8.1

Are you really.

How do you change the left swipe on iOS that searches the device?

Because the right button on WP searches the device and web.

You can change the IE search engine.

I've never owned an iPhone so can't comment.

And AlecR has shown that he clearly can't change the IE search engine. I would suggest changing the browser, but that doesn't look like its an option either.

This is my issue with WP. Little things that in isolation are pretty insignificant, yet when there are lots of them it soon builds up. 8.1 has helped, but it's far to little, far too late.

Windows Phone doesn't need to exist - that's the biggest issue with it and why people don't switch to it (also the app selection, which comes from this issue).

It has some iPhone bits that don't work properly - why not just buy an iPhone. It has some Android bits that don't work properly - why not just buy an Android phone.

Having two OSs is good as it creates competition and you could argue that a third one does too but there's nothing innovative about WP in my view. There's nothing that makes it stand out for me - a few good, undeveloped features and a lot of copied, badly developed features.

Just oh god can be closed or as open as you want.
Loo it's far to open even Google admit it. It's a mess, it's aplintered, every phone company has different UIs etc. It is far to open what ever you say.

Ios works like WP. So that last comment is stupid. Just that WP is more open, sd cards, file explorers, amongst other things. Making it far mire open. Both however have elements of if it's not included you can do it, unlike android.

Agreed. Find iOS a bit restrictive* but hate the awful mess that is android? WP fits nicely in the middle. It allows you to modify and personalise it more than iOS but doesn't bog down and be just generally unintuitive like android**.

Besides, the live tile design is far and away better than anything android or iOS have available to them. And it's not like iOS and android haven't copied significant chunks of the ui and features from WP, much like WP has copied many features from them.

*Apple drive me nuts with the way they deal with photos for example
** android on the other hand drives me nuts for the way it slows down over time, apps don't work properly on some phones, unintuitive ui's etc. at least that was my experience with an HTC one for 18 months. Unfortunately android is the closest thing you can get to windows mobile in 2014... MS learned from their mistakes and released WP. Android is still trying to extract itself from the hole it dug next to WM... :p

All that said, I'm currently on an iPhone 6. I do like WP, just couldn't bring myself to getting a 930 because of its size and the fact it is missing a couple of key apps for me. :(. In a year or so's time that may change, or I may try android again (gulp)

Which camp do I fall into then? ;)

Or alternatively all OSs have their positives and negatives at varying times depending on the needs of a person at that time.

5 years ago, when I had a WM 6.1 phone I would have loved android. I would have rooted it and installed custom Roms, much like I did with my WP. Nowi but want something that is intuitive and "just works". I still don't think android does that as well as either iOS or WP.

Better than people who can't compare.

Or people who have had 5 Android phones and somehow expect WP to be the same and then throw it in the bin a few days later to go back to Android "because it's rubbish"...

Change is fun (if a little frustrating at times). Repeatedly using the same OS is boring...

The only thing that's clear is that you don't know the difference between device search and browser settings.
You have just said you've no experience of one of the major OS'es. Its like you're giving a school book report on a book that you've not read.

I'm in a WP thread and talking about android. Why do I have to have owned an iPhone to be allowed in? Seems this thread has a bunch of entry requirements, you must agree with Glaucus, you must like WP, you must have owned Android and iOS too. Anything else?

And AlecR posted screenshots of where the browser search option should be, and its not there. Maybe you should this thread properly before submitting your book report on it?

Christ this is worse than the Apple fanboy threads. At least they have devices and an OS worth defending.

Lets recap what you're complaining about.

Can't configure device search, but you don't know if its possible on other OS.

Browser search is configurable on your phone, but not on someone else's phone.

There is only 1 entry requirement and that is to ask for assistance, rather than moan about how some other OS is better just because you don't know how to use it.
Follow that one requirement and everyone will get along fine instead of instantly getting everyone's back up.

And just to be clear, that requirement applies to all phone OS discussion threads, so don't think this thread is anything special.
