Right then just to start off i've been having a few issues regarding wireless ( I think)
Anyway connection has always been on WPA/WPA2 since having many problems the bt technical idiots, remotely logged into my machine and set the connection to WEP. Now when i do a speedtest, i'm getting a very poor d/l speed of anything from 8mbps to 16mbps. So i logged into router and changed it back to WPA/WPA2. Now a speedtest gets me a good 36mbps. ANy reson why this should halve when on WEP???

Thanks.

Greetings,

That should not happen as wep has less encryption and so less overheads and so more thoughput,

Might be a interference issue,
Did you notice what channel they put it on to also?

Most of the time its set to auto this can at times be ok but its best to pick a channel ,

As all others around me use 6 - 11 i am using 13 and not had a issue.

Is there any reason you'd want it on WEP?

As far as i was aware, WEP is nearly useless and can be broken in a matter of seconds can it not? You'd 100% want to be on WPA2 unless you have some reason not to be.

This is the issue, i have been trying all morning and the d/l sped has been no more than 16mbps as soon as i changed it back to WPA it reaches 36mpbs.
It was bt who changed it saying it would be a more reliable connection.
Wireless channel is set to 11

I'd ignore BT and use WPA myself. WEP is effectively the same as running an unsecured network IMHO.

If you do have any issues with WPA then it would be better to try and fix those rather than using WEP.

Yeah i am using WPA now, but im having issues and the last time i rang BT they changed it saying there will be less issues using WEP

What were the issues?

I've never heard or personally experienced a less stable connection on WPA2 over WEP myself. It sounds as if BT were using that as an excuse to cover up another issue maybe?

Well i keep getting disconnected from my wireless, but on both my MacBook and other halves netbook its still showing as connected to the wireless. All modem and router are still connected and no lights change. But both machines for some reason wont connect to internet for about 3-5 mins, almost as if router reboots but its not lol. Hope all that makes sense.

Sound as if the router itself is having issues to be honest.

One thing to check would be to see how many other Wi-Fi networks are in the area as over congestion on channels can cause issues like that. I have no problem here but at the other halfs parents there are probabaly 10-12 Wi-Fi networks in range and it's a complete nightmare to try and keep that stable.

If you do have a lot of networks in range then try to position your network into a free (or less congested at least) channel.

Well having checked there are about 6 others in the area that i can pick up at the moment.
Would it be worth changing the channel on the router??

If you are on the same (or close) channel then yes. I use an app on my phone called wifi analyzer which displays all wifi networks in an area and helps you to find the clearest one. Windows isn't so helpful because it doesn't show the overlap of channels plus it filters some networks out.

This is what i use: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer

If you don't have an android phone i should imagine that a program like that exists for other phones or for windows itself. The second picture in that link shows the very useful view for this kind of thing. It will be hard to avoid some overlap with a high amount of networks, but the clearer the better.

Well

36mbps suggests you're on WirelessN, and N works better with WPA than WEP so that might explain the speed differences.

Yeah the only phones we have in our house are Iphones at the moment, so maybe i will look for something that i can use with that.

As for the 36mbps thats what i am connected to the internet at, not what im connected to the wireless at. Didnt think of checking that to be honest.

Not getting issues with slow wireless, just the d/l speed on speedtester was the the speed when on WEP instead of WPA
