I've just been having a browse through the settings on my WRT54GL. I'm very glad I did as I found that the wireless security I had setup (WPA2 mixed with a full key) had for some reason reverted to WEP 64bit encryption with an empty key. I have no idea how long it has been like this; maybe days or even weeks.

My own PC is wired into the router, but we have two wireless computers on the network which are used for a whole variety of things, and all computers are sharing files. I am now slightly worried as to what may have been going on and what may have been vulnerable over the past however long security has been off. I occassionaly noticed a foreign MAC on the router's DHCP table, but thought nothing of it when I thought WPA2 was enabled. But now I'm fairly concerned.

What are the chances that someone has been accessing my internet and or other data from my connection? What is the best thing to do now?

I have the DD-WRT firmware, does anyone know of any similar occurences where the wireless security has done odd things?

if your router was set to WEP then your 2 wireless pc's would not of able to connect to it as you have them setup with the WPA2 settings and not wep?

I didn't set my computers up at all, the windows utility just searched for available networks and automatically connected to one's with no key or a key it'd remembered.

Chances are you routers reset itslef or been reset by another user and the xp wireless client have then automatically logged on, somebody else could then have logged on in the same way to give the new mac you have seen (check if its was logged on long).

You could check and change all the routers user name and password for the router admin pages and see if any remote access options can be turned off inc telnet access

Also delete from the wireless pc's all wireless connections other than a new WPA2 key to stop them logging on to wep only (not sure that will stop wepo and a balnk key though). double check the setings are saved on the router , reboot it and check they remain
