Just a quick question please guys...

I am wanting to setup WPA2 encryption on my parents home network, but if they have a cheap wireless card in the PC, is there the chance that this will not be possible?

Is it the hardware of the wireless card that is the limitation with regards to security, or will Windows Vista be able to overide that in anyway?

Sorry for the beginner questions, just new to all this.

Also, will my PS3 work with WPA2 or will it have to be something else?

Thanks

Cheers for the replies guys. Is there any way that I can find out what limitation the wireless card has in this PC?

...and if there's no option for WPA2, make sure you check for updated drivers/firmware which might have added that functionality since your purchase ;)

Both our Wii and PS3 connect to our wireless router configured with WPA2 no probs. On the PC wireless card front check the capabilities of the card and see what options it gives you. Also upgrading may not always be the solution, for 1 of my laptops I actually had to go to an older driver in order to get the WPA2 option.

Thanks for the tips guys, is there any way to check what the wireless card is capable of without opening the PC?

In Device Manager it is labelled as: 'Am1772(tm) Wireless LAN Chipset'

Does that help at all?

Not natively, but you can easily download a patch from one of MS's KB articles which solves this instantly and painlessly :) I run WPA2-PSK on my WRT54GL and two of our machines are XP (one Home one Pro).

Edit: Beaten :p
