How badly does said stuff stick out of the mug, just straight up or all over the place and to the sides?

Other idea, find a box to put it in.

Put it in the middle of a square sheet, bunch the sheet up above it, tie it with a ribbon.

Easier with foil type paper.

Also.. a grater? Like a big scary cheese grater or an adorable nutmeg grater?

Its straight up all over the place, the stupid grater is almost as big as the mug.

No boxes about. Maybe 9pm on xmas eve wasn't the best time to start wrapping.

Set fire to the stuff, smash the mug into little bits and put both in the envelope with the card.

Open newspaper, place item in centre, squash newspaper around item, wrap with copious amounts of tape.
