Hi there :)

Well, the misses dropped her laptop earlier from a considerable height, onto wooden flooring and not surprisingly, it's playing up.

Ran for a few hours fine, but completely froze earlier, and now when turning on all that is displayed is 'write error' in the top left of the screen.

Now, i'm aware that it's probably screwed internally from the fall, but just wanted to get some input before she takes it in tomorrow to get looked at.

I'm guessing this is most likely a hard-drive issue from the 'write error' message that appears?

Cheers :)

Probably.

Could also be a memory stick displaced from its slot or less likely the CPU. laptops tend to have tight fitting connections however by virtue of their size more fragile.

If the power is dependant on the battery being installed, the battery may have suffered in the fall allowing the few hours use but then stopping working.

I would remove covers and check that the memory, disk and battery connections are fine as far as can be seen. I would try to run Bart PE or some other diagnostic start up disk and see if the system boots into that.

You do not say if the laptop posts up to a certain point. I assume this is so until it meets the fault. Booting on the CD will maybe give some clues as to the problem.

If it is a toshiba, pressing F12 will give the boot menu other makes have different keys, F2, F10 or Home etc.

good luck, andy.
