Hi,

Sorry for being short here but currently at work. I have been in an accident which has caused my dc2 to be written off. I just had a call saying my car is being picked up tomorrow by a scrapyard. The problem is I haven't had my payout agreed, should I not let them take my car or is this normal procedure? I will definitely be taking photos of it before it goes.

How badly damaged is it? Is it not worth buying it back off the insurers and breaking it - aren't parts for these cars sought after?

I can't answer your OP though I'm afraid.

I had a small bump last year but, because my car isnt worth much, the insurer wanted it written off. They arranged for a scrap yard to come and pick up my car. This was before they had payed out (or even given me a valuation).
I phoned the scrap yard and told them not to bother because i wouldnt let them take it, they didnt seem too bothered.

Although this was a slightly different situation because i was going to argue with the insurer that i wanted my car fixed and not written off.

Once a vehicle has been deemed at total loss it needs to be removed to a place of free storage, so your insurers will take it to the scrapyard of the company they have a contract with.

If your vehicle is currently somewhere that isnt charging storage (IE your driveway) then tell them you dont want it moved. If it is an a garage then it will incur storage charges, and once the vehicle has been declared a total loss you will become liable for the storage charges (from this moment until it is removed) if you dont allow them to move it.

However, until you accept an offer and hand over the V5 etc they cannot dispose of it as it isn't legally their property. You can, if the vehicle is a cat D retain the vehicle, you will need to pay the salvage value, but then you keep the vehicle and repair it if you wish.

Hope that helps.

Hmm thanks for the info, I will call them when they open tomorrow about this. It is currently on my drive so really no issue it staying there longer. I will get it delayed as for a start I want to be in for them taking it.

Is it your fault?

This is a hugely important point as your entitlements vary depending on whether you are claiming on your own policy or that of the third party.

Like Fox says, only worry if you are not fully comprehensive.

You should get a settlement regardless of fault, unless you think there is a reason why your policy could be void.

I am fully comp and by the looks of it, it is going 50/50 due to it being a roundabout incident with no witnesses.

Scratched passenger door, smashed mirror, dented & scratched arch, scratched wheel, snapped front bumper, snapped front indicator, damaged headlights, scratched bonnet, bent wheel hub/upright.

Number of parts damaged soon adds up!

uhm, you should buy it back for salvage value and either fix/bodge it or break it for parts. tbf it doesnt sound that badly damaged, just needs a strut+hub+ wishbone to get it drivable again?

:/

pics?

Unless the front is caved in, it may cost a lot less than you think in a friendly bodyshop + second hand parts

Get the payout, buy it back, fix what needs fixing, wing mirrior, wheel and lights, don't bother with the scratches and stuff, VIC test + MOT and be happy :D
