Write Protection Error...

Hey guys, just took delivery of my new system from Overclockers the other day. I thought I'd move to Vista x64 since I have 6gb of ram now but I'm having a problem with my external USB hard drive.

Basically it periodically switches to write protection mode, meaning I cannot edit, delete, format or add anything to the drive. Occasionally if I am lucky, rebooting the drive will remove the write protection. I've spent the last few days researching this on google and the only thing I've really found is that its a bug with x64 operating systems.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem and how to fix it? My account has full admin permissions over the drive and I've tried various reg tweaks, diskpart, I've even wiped the drive completely when I've been able to and formated it again within Vista. I've also ran error checking which turned up no problems, so I'm at a loss as to what to do.

I would have thought it might have been errors too, hence why I ran chkdsk on it and found no problems with it, but even then there has been absolutely no corruption of data and when its out of write protection mode there is no problem with massive transfering of data (at the moment I've already formated the disk and am putting 100GB of data back on it without any hassle). But as I said, after a good bit of research over the last few days, this appears to be a fairly common problem with Vista x64. :(
