I know that ^^ is supposed to be a conversation filler but what is its purpose? I regard it as a conversation-killer and it grinds my gears when I see it. Luckily I only really have 1 instant chat buddy. Although she used to do it, she kicked the ^^ habit a while back.
I quit WoW a few months ago, but I remember seeing it on guild / party chat a lot.
It's also on deviantART when people respond to comments.
On a side note, what's up with people who write smilies in reverse, like C: instead of
like us 'oldies' have always been used to? Only some Arabic and Asian races read right-to-left, and because we, as Brits, read left-to-right, it's logical to read e.g. the happy smiley as
