I know that ^^ is supposed to be a conversation filler but what is its purpose? I regard it as a conversation-killer and it grinds my gears when I see it. Luckily I only really have 1 instant chat buddy. Although she used to do it, she kicked the ^^ habit a while back.

I quit WoW a few months ago, but I remember seeing it on guild / party chat a lot.

It's also on deviantART when people respond to comments.

On a side note, what's up with people who write smilies in reverse, like C: instead of :-) like us 'oldies' have always been used to? Only some Arabic and Asian races read right-to-left, and because we, as Brits, read left-to-right, it's logical to read e.g. the happy smiley as :-) The opposite is something I've only noticed in the last 12 months.

:-D

It's a happy face, basically the Japanese equivilent to :-)

As for reverse smilies it's probably to avoid automated conversion to ones such as :) (:

Ahh right. Is it the same as when an Ocuk'er quotes an existing post, then writes 'this'? Let's say I quoted yours Mp4 (see below) and wrote 'this' underneath. I think that looks better than ^^. Peterattheboro, I've seen some of the anime ASCII like the obligatory "do the kirby" that I've seen one time too many :-)

^^

it's pointing to the above sentance id say

This.

i always thought it was a japofag smily face like they do on the Pokemon thing.

^^ pika pika ! Me rove u rong time la !

Depends on the situation. Probably most often "as above" ^^, but I guess also a lazy shorthand for ^_^
