Frankly, my handwriting is awful and it's really irritating sometimes when I look at someone that can write really neatly but quickly, without any effort at all.

How can one improve their handwriting and make sure it's consistently neat and the same all the time?

Have you tried using a variety of different pens? Ball point, gel, fountain, biro?

I can only write neatly with a fountain pen, and I quite like my handwriting, but give me a ball-point and it looks like a 2-year olds. Just an idea. :)

Practise!

I have rubbish handwriting but really, I can't remember the last time I wrote anything more than a card or a contract/form...

I have absolutely terrible handwriting. It really does look like an infants writing. Its been like that all my life, I even had extra lessons at school to try and improve it. Ive now just come to accept that its either not going to get better, or I should have been a doctor. Fortunately I rarely have to write anything by hand at work.

For me it depends on what i'm writing down. For instance during exams my writing gets a bit scruffy and seems to change style halfway through but for cards, i take my time and it looks pretty. :)

My hand writing is clear readable and people comment on how nice and goodlooking they are. The only thing is i can change and adapt to any style of writing - comes in handy when i used to forge signature for a friend. I once read that people with multiple style of hand writing have different sides to them (and the bad side is they can be multiperson in one with a mad man in between)

As for the Op, try writing slowly and clearly, that helps.

Do some research as to how you should be holding the pen. Then practice practice practice. Go slowly at first, be as neat and legible as you can, maintain the same character heights and add any flourishes you want to include in your style. Only way to have nice handwriting is to do it a lot.

Just as long as you dont do those circles instead of dots on i's and j's etc.! :p

When I was in primary school, we had to do a handwriting exercise at least once a week.

The teacher would give us a limerick to copy into our handwriting jotters.
I always took twice as long as the rest of the class but only once got a gold star (I think the teacher felt sorry for me :o ).

My handwriting is truly atrocious - if I take my time, it's barely legible - if I rush, then I can barely read it myself never mind anybody else read it :(

Just try practicing, your writing may improve or you may be like me and simply unable to write neatly without huge amounts of effort.

It doesn't mean you're thick or anything like that - my IQ is waaaay above average, I just write like a spider walked through an inkpot and over the page.

Slow down and practice. And for some reason, my handwriting always looks so much better when I use a pencil :S

Oddly enough, mine is slightly better using a pencil

My hands hurt after holding a pen for more than a few minutes. Guess I apply too much pressure or don't hold the pen right, or something. I avoid using them whenever possible (which is probably counter-productive, but what the heck, it's the digital age, right).

I felt the same ways as well as a result of pens not being allowed in the British Library, so during my revision period, i fell in love with the use of Pencils (the click ones in a case)

MY hand writing has always looekd the same now as it did when I was 5 years old, except now its just a lot smaller lol.

It's terrible but readable, which is enough for me.

I think one of the main things to be careful about is spacing. I know that if my handwriting is messy to look at, just give a little bit more space between letters (if printed) and words. So even if each letter is a bit messy, at least it doesn't make ones eyes bleed.

Amen to that :D

These new fangled pooter thingies are handy beasts

Anytime I make a list for anything (shopping, holiday checklist etc.) it gets done in Notepad and printed out - at least I won't get to the supermarket and think "what the hell was this item?"

Haha yes! So it isn't just me that does that. Well not the shopping list (i don't do shopping) but whenever I need to write down a website url or email address for a friend, its done in good ol' notepad.

I can never read other peoples' website addresses when they write them down.

"is that a dot or a dash?"

Bingo. You can purchase excellent pens that are a funky shape to correct the issue, I used to get dreadful crap until the missus' mum (school teacher) told me off and gave me one of them. They can be picked up from most stationary shops for a few squiddles.
