Hi,
I became the owner of an X reg Clio 1.2 Grade last week.
On checking the fluid levels I found that the power steering fluid was just below minimum.
I had my first trip to the local Renault garage and gave the parts man my registration number as a reference and ordered a load of parts including power steering fluid. I was a bit surprised to see that he gave me Renaultmatic D3 SYN auto gearbox oil, I did not realise it was used for power steering. He confirmed it was correct.
One of the items I bought was a set of rubber mats.
On getting home I proceeded to top up the various fluids including the steering.
I tried to fit the mats and it was obvious that I had been sold the wrong ones.I went back to the garage and another parts guy said that I had been sold the mats for the latest Clio. I then started wondering about the powersteering fluid, especially as the Haynes manual that I have just bought states that the gearbox should use the D3 SYN and the power steering should be using Renaultmatic D2.
A search on the internet revealed a Renault oil specification sheet stating that the D3 SYN is not a replacement for the D2 oil.
I said that I was most worried that potentially I had been sold the wrong fluid and it may cause damage to the seals in the system. The service guy said he would email ELF to ask if the fluids are compatible.
I am concerned that they may fob me off but I do not want to worry about my wife driving the car and eventually the potential of a big bill to replace parts due to the incorrect product being used.
So, does any one know if these 2 oils can be mixed or should I insist that the system is flushed out.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me,
PeterT
