First one is a modem/router......Ive got the same model working on BT fiber...the second one doesnt appear to be a modem/router, just a router...so you would need a seperate modem for this to work.

That doesn't appear to tell the whole story AHarvey.

The D7000 Modem / Router that purchased online is a combined Modem / Router and would allow you to remove your Sky Hub while increasing your WiFi performance and routing options.

The R8000 has no built in Modem so while it would "work" with your Sky Fibre (giving you increased WiFi performance and more routing options) it would still require the use of your Sky Hub.

So it depends what you bought it for.

Took 2 seconds to google the model and find its a cable router not VDSL (Fibre)

NETGEAR Nighthawk X6-AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless Gigabit Cable Router (Three Offload Processors/Dynamic QoS).

Lazy Lazy people

you could use it but still have to use the supplied Sky modem to get internet access

By Sky Fiber do you mean VDSL2? Quick Google and the X6 doesn't appear to have a modem which will be an issue for you.

i have a bt modem with Sky Hub 2 (SR102) do i just plug the bt modem in put in my sky user name and password all under mer .i dont want to piggy back from the sky hub itself i want to use vpn on the router itself .thanks

If you have the white Openreach modem then yes you can use that with the R8000, assuming the mer support is fine.

Congratz on getting a free upgrade ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Is it supposed to support MER? There's no obvious information out there to suggest that it does.

You might have some luck if it supports Tomato, OpenWRT, DD-WRT, etc.

Personally I'd return it and get something known to work (or change your ISP to one that doesn't make life difficult for no good reason ;)).

Lets make this easy..

This is just a router that will work with Virgin media as a stand alone item..

it does NOt have a modem built in which you need for ADSL or VDSL (Fibre is known as VDSL)

You need the one you originally ordered (i have one connected to Sky Fibre)

You could technically use this router but you will have to use the supplied SKY modem to get internet access then just use this router for wireless or as extra Ethernet ports.

As the OP has the required VDSL modem the only thing stopping this working is Sky's MER implementation.

It doesn't help the OP but he'd be up and running if his ISP was BT, Plusnet, Zen, etc.

Ok, I'm going to be the first to admit my ignorance here because there seems to be a bit of confusion going on.

1) The OP currently has a Sky Hub (this is a combined modem and router)
2) The OP tried to purchase a Netgear D7000 (which is also a combined modem and router)
3) The OP actually received a Netgear R8000 (this has NO modem and is ONLY a router)

By the LOOKS of it the OP was indenting on replacing the Sky Hub with the D7000 (which entirely makes sense) but since he got a R8000 my understanding is that it does not include a modem and as such he can not replace the Sky Hub because he still needs a modem.

However, as I suggested he can use the R8000 in combination with the Sky Hub as he can use the Sky Hub as a modem but then the R8000 as an improved router.

To my knowledge, no amount of firmware updates or changes can add modem functionality to the R8000 as it is missing the required hardware.

My understanding of MER is that is an authentication method for a modem. There's no MER options on the router because it doesn't need it.

As the OP has the required VDSL modem the only thing stopping this working is Sky's MER implementation.

It doesn't help the OP but he'd be up and running if his ISP was BT, Plusnet, Zen, etc.

To me, this makes no sense. The MER side of things is handled by the Sky Hub (modem). Just plugging in a router you shouldn't have to configure anything other than configuring the WAN connection from the router to the Sky Hub. MER isn't required on the router.

As bremen1984 suggests, Merlin is DD-WRT but only for Asus routers. The OP can't install Merlin, he'd have to install vanila DD-WRT. But regardless, that won't add modem functionality, or MER support.

As I see it the OP has two options:

1) Use the Sky Hub in combination with the R8000 that he received (custom firmware or not)
2) Return the R8000 for the D7000 he originally ordered

Again, the specifics aren't totally clear to me so please correct anything I've said that's wrong.

EDIT: In fact, the thing that has got me confused the most... how has the OP managed to plug his phone line into the R8000 without the Sky Hub?? If he IS using the Sky Hub he shouldn't have to set up MER - am I right??

The R8000 doesn't have a modem, but the OP has an Openreach VDSL modem that adds that functionality.

The R8000 along with the Openreach VDSL modem would work with any VDSL connection that uses standard PPPoE. Sky don't use standard PPPoE so any router you use needs to support their implementation of MER. If there's a firmware available (third-party or OEM) that supports the R8000 and MER then it would work.

You can't use the Sky Hub as a modem. You can double NAT and connect a second router behind it, but that isn't the same thing.

For the most part double NAT issues can be worked around, but not always. It's something best avoided if you can.

Because it doesn't have the option available. There's no way of getting it to pass the WAN IP through to a device connected behind it.

Whatever you do you'll end up with a situation like:

WAN IP ---> Sky Hub <--- 192.168.0.n ---> Second Router <--- 192.168.1.n

Can't you just give the second router an IP in the LAN subnet of the Sky Hub, set the Sky Hub as the default gateway and disable WiFi on the Sky Hub? Not familiar with Sky Hubs.

Essentially he'd be using the new router as a glorified switch/access point, however i doubt he will need to do any routing on it.
