I'm looking to replace my server which currently routes my ethernet internet connection with a low powered router. The first thing that came into my head was a wrt54g, however I was hoping there may be a newer alternative, perhaps with 802.11n capabilities?

I don't want to spend much money as this is supposed to be a money saving exercise, so nothing extravagant please.

I assume these are well regarded and perform as they should? If so, it does seem as if that meets the initial brief. Thank you.

That said, I don't mind forking out a bit more for something with more functionality. A USB port for USB storage/print server would be useful if that is even a possibility with one of the custom firmwares?

Edit: Does anyone have (or have an opinion of) the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH

This appears to come with DD-WRT out of the box, supports USB storage and 3G modems. For £50 with two years warranty, this seems like an absolute bargain considering what you get.

Asus RT-N16?

Maybe a bit more than you were hoping price wise but wireless N, Gigabit, USB and Tomato support it just seems like an epic win!

I did spot this, but it's double the price of the Buffalo with no additional features other than a slightly faster CPU.
