I just recieved my WRT54GL router today and would like to know if i realy need to run the cd before using it? I dont plan on using it as a router just quite yet, i was going to connect it to my switch and then configure it with tomato firmware while my netgear router still allows me to continue web browsing while im doing this.

Also, if the firmware is linux, does that mean i can run any linux program on it? assuming the router has sufficient space remaining after tomato install, could i put irsii or bitchx on the router to run as a IRC bouncer for me? as both are capable of running on linux.

I wouldn't plug it into a network that already has a router presumably running DHCP on it, will give you all sorts of trouble if they are trying to run in the same range.

Just plug your PC straight into the router and configure it from there, will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

In theory you can compile and run any Linux program for it. I'm no developer though, so I can't tell you how to do it. You'll need to compile the program in question for MIPS, probably on a different machine because I don't think you'd have space in the ROM for gcc, etc. You'd then transfer the binary to the device and set it up.

the default linksys ip is 192.168.1.1 so i assume it uses the range 192.168.1.1 - 254 where as my current network uses 192.168.0.1 - 254, so the ranges are different.

Also my pc only has 1 ethernet port, so plugging it directly in to my pc wont be an option as i need it running, which is why i was planning to connect it to my switch, then once i turn it on, connect to it and disable DHCP.

Just plug it into your PC once to setup/turn off the DCHP and any other settings before plugging it into your other router. I'm sure you can live without the internet for 10 minutes while you do that.

Yes, the ranges are different so, assuming your PC doesn't pick up a new address from the new router (which it probably won't), you won't be able to access it. The only sensible and sanity-protecting way to do it is to disconnect your PC from the current LAN, connect it to the new router, disable DHCP on the new router and give it a static address on the current LAN then connect the new router and PC to the current LAN. Having two active DHCP servers on different ranges on one LAN makes life a bit more than 'interesting'....

well i managed to configure the router to use 192.168.0.10 so its on the same range as my current network, and dhcp is disabled. I should add that configuring it can be slightly annoying, because once you saved changes to the IP, its no longer possible to access it without a reset (since it gives you a .1.x ip when you start up with it connected, and once the router becomes .0.x, you can no longer access it with a .1.x ip).

Now its just a matter of me finding a decent firmward to put on it, and hopefully some sort of irc client :)

there isnt seperate programs specificaly to act as a client and specificaly act as a BNC. The programs that can act as BNCs are the same as any other irc client, just with the ability to proxy incomming connections. take bitchx for example, thats a IRC client which can be used as a BNC. So yes i want to run a BNC service, and to do that i have to install an irc client that can do this.
