hi there, I got an SBS 2003 server in which I have recently installed WSUS to help administer what updates get installed and when to the clients

However I am having some problems with it, The setup went through fine, I decided to go the group policy route for the easy distro onto the clients, but for some reason the clients are not appearing in the WSUS Admin Console

I've obviously refreshed the group policy (gpupdate /force) and on the clients Ive forced them to redetect a windows update server 'wuauclt.exe /detectnow (which if they GP is correct, which it is should point them to the server with WSUS on)

Still no computers thou???

Any help at all,

BTW the WSUS server is on port 8530, which I have specified in the GP ie: http://myservername:8530

Have you enabled and filled in the 'Enable client-side targeting' gpo entry and created the associated computer groups in your WSUS? You need to manually add the computer groups to WSUS, just becase you've set them in the gpo it won't automatically create them. It's very frustrating!!

this might sound stupid, but I haven't enabled 'Enable client-side targeting' as far as I know, nor can I find it in the same administrative template as all the other WSUS options

Look here for the 'Enable client-side targeting',

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Updates

Enable the 'Enable client-side targeting' and fill in a target group name.

You also need to goto 'Computers' on your WSUS, 'Create a new computer group' and give it the same name that you entered for the target group name in the gpo.

The computers *should* then start appearing in you WSUS.

weird, Ive enabled client side targeting and yes client side targeting is enabled in the WSUS Web Console

forced a gpupdate and windows update server detect again, still no joy...

maybe its an SBS issue?

the WSUS website is not installed into the default wesbite in IIS, if thats any help?

also the IUSR IIS account is a member of the Domain Users Group

also, this keeps happening,

'Check your server configuration
One or more Update Service components could not be contacted. Check your server status and ensure that the Windows Server Update Service is running. Non-running services: SelfUpdate'

in the WSUS Status page, If I restart the update services, this goes away for about 30mins!!

its been a bit of a pain really, on Server 2003 I had no problems with this, only on SBS have I had issues
