WSUS Server on Windows XP

Hi,

Just a quick one: is there any way to get a WSUS server running on XP.

We're stuck with 512K internet here at home still (which constantly gets reduced to a 350K IP profile), so downloading updates for 7-8 computers is a bit long winded and can take ages depending on the size of the update.

Anyway, I've already got a download server going which I set up on XP & I'd like to run WSUS from the same server.

Is there any way to trick WSUS into thinking I'm using Server 2003 when in fact I'm not? Or is there a version that's made for XP servers?

Thanks,
Craig.

Nope, not that I can find anyway - Windows server only.

If you have a spare machine and access to Windows 2003, how about setting one up in a virtual machine?

(Never tried it, but can't see why that wouldn't work).

That's a pretty good idea if there's no other way to get it running directly on XP. Time to setup VMWare on my server then :)

I've actually had it running in a VMWare on my main PC all day just playing around & seeing how it works, so it shouldn't be a problem.

You could setup SquidProxy and force caching of Windows updates. Its not recommended to cache dynamic content but if you limited it down to windows updates you might have an acceptable solution.

I guess then I'd re-direct the Windows Updates of all my other computers to the proxy?
