WSUS Statistics Question

I’ve just set up a WSUS box for our network. For the static machines on the network it’s a piece of cake, I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner to be honest.

The problem I have is with our laptops. Some people bring theirs in daily which is fine, but others I don’t see for a month at a time and even then they may not connect to the network. It’s no biggie really, I can just set these machines to point to Microsoft for their updates however I’d still like to keep an eye on how up to date they are.

Those that have done this before know that there are two different settings you can define, one for update source and one for statistics. If I leave the update source blank and set the statistics setting to point to my WSUS server, will this reliably communicate back their status when they reconnect to our network?

I can test this myself of course, I just wondered if anyone had done this before and run into any problems/have any tips. One issue I can think of is that the machines won’t be on the network long enough to report back, but we can’t have everything I suppose.

Cheers

Can you not put your server (or at least the port for statistic reporting) publicly visible?

What's the rest of the infrastructure? If its Server 2008R2, have you thought about implementing DirectAccess?

I thought about DirectAccess but we're only licensed for Pro and as far as I can tell it's an Enterprise-only feature. Making the server visible is not an option either (too much red tape)

I think I'm just going to try it and see how it goes. I'll make them aggressively check for updates online and install them automatically. To be honest the laptops will be well locked down and I don't foresee too much trouble, it would just be a nice bonus to be able to see at a glance if there are any severely lagging behind.
