Hi all i'm stuck in a halls-like room again (hopefully for the last time in my life!) and am looking for some speakers for my new laptop.

I'm really liking the look and reviews of the Z-10's and they have really come down in price! Didn't they used to be £100 ish?

So can anyone recommend these to me? Don't want hassle of a sub in this instance:)

Cheers

I've had mine a few years now and still really like them. Great sound quality, impressive volume when pushed and I like the fact they're USB as it means there's only one volume control to worry about.

I too bought them because I no longer wanted a sub, but they still create enough bass to be enjoyable without it being too much.

I think they are a good solution for a laptop, as they are USB, so won't use the laptop's onboard sound chip. I guess like motherboards, laptops audio is advancing every generation. However, laptop audio is prone to poor signal to noise ratio, using USB speakers like the Z-10 would avoid this potential problem.

Cheers, I read that you hook up both usb AND 3.5mm jack?

I don't get why it bypasses the soundcard? Where does it get it's info from then lol?!:)

I am impressed with the features for £50, they look like they'll destroy my creative 2.1 set I bought 6 yrs ago now! (noo mid range, generally poor but looked cool)

You can use either. The 3.5mm jack is intended to connect an MP3 for eg, but you could always use that to connect to the laptop if you wanted. You don't use both together though, one or the other at any one time.

To put it simply, it has it's own built in sound card. :)

ah right cheers marsman, another review said the same thing, so it can't be powered by usb surely it has a mains plug adapter too?

I have a set of these, too. They're really nice. I replaced a set that had a separate sub and find them much clearer. My previous speakers had to be on relatively loud to be used effectively, but although they didn't seem loud within the room, the sub bass was deafening elsewhere. The Z10s are much more neighbour friendly and still sound good at lower levels. You can also customise the LED output, should you so wish...

Well they are big beasts lol! not as portable as I thought but shouldn't matter too much

In some ways they DO sound better than my 5.1 Z-5400's! More midrange and hearing components to tracks I hadn't heard before! This came as a very pleasant surprise

However I am getting intermittent 'skips' I call them every min or so, I find it quite distracting, any ideas whats going on?
I installed the software again which 2nd time round worked properly on plugging the speakers in, but still the skipping

Aside from that I can really recommend these speakers, they look badass and love the LCD:)
Cpu usage while gaming is fun to watch

Thanks for the review, I am hoping to buy a pair of these myself.

Regarding the skipping, are there any CPU usage spikes when it happens?

ok they can't quite hack metal double-tap bass like opeth etc but the amount of bass in a more poppy song has really surprised me, especially when it seems to create a standing wave and resonate the small room!

skipping is still going on, i'm gonna plug em into my desktop this wknd and see what happens

b3mor I have looked for patterns in the skipping but have not found one as of yet, google searches seem fruitless atm so i'll keep you posted

plugged in to watch a film on a standard tv, sound was sooo much better:)

OK, they are NOT better than my THX Z-5400's. bass is obviously no where near as tight and generally the sound purity is reduced. however for 2.0, semi-portable, laptop speakers for fifty quid they are DAMN impressive. I filled our lounge with hotel california a lot more convincingly than any ipod dock i've seen/heard.

I am NOT as far as I am aware getting skipping on my desktop. Why this is I do not know:(

Another bizarre thing, both my ipods DO NOT work on the 3.5mm cable. However plugged into my mates laptop headphone jack to watch an FA game on, they worked fine! how can they not 'like' the functioning ipod signals?!

ideas?
