I think it's Better Gmail that does this, haven't used it in a while.

ahh, i had that before, but didn't like what it did to gmail, i'll try it at home later, hopefully i can just disable everything it does, besides the catcher

I'm using it again myself and you can turn on/off whatever you please. ALternatively just use greasemoney and a script for what you want, this is just a collection of greasemonkey scripts in extension form.
