¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Downloading from newsgroups should be fast, as it's their server after all.

Now it's just gone from 750K/s down to 133. :(

Are there any tricks I can do to actually get the speed I'm paying for (8 meg).:(

EDIT: Now it's gone down to 56k speeds!

Well even if I'm throttled, it still doesn't explain why I'm now getting 56k speeds! I've just tried rebooting the router and it's still the same. :( New ISP time I think....

I know a few people on Virgin around here, and their speeds completely stonewalled yesterday evening for 2-3 hours (all cable connections).

If you hit the STM limit on ADSL during peak hours you'll get throttled down to 80k(yes...80k...) roughly 6-7KB/s for a full week.

If its out of peak then you've been hit with application throttling.

Monitoring traffic:
Well each week we’ll monitor how much data our broadband customers download during peak times only. We measure this in kilobytes (KB). Peak times run from 4pm till midnight. We then add up the total amount of data downloaded over the week per customer. We then rank the list of customers, heaviest users first. From this list, we pick out the top 5% of heaviest users over the week. We reserve the right to traffic manage these customers during peak times. Traffic management lasts for just one week and is only applied during peak times (4pm till midnight).

Traffic Management:
For the small number of customers who are in the top 5% of heaviest users, our traffic management solution will temporarily set download speeds to no lower than 80Kbit/s. This limit is applied daily, 4pm until midnight, for one week.

Application Management:
Application Management is really simple. We have a set of rules that manages how much bandwidth is allocated to a specific list of applications and protocols during peak periods. The rules apply to everyone on the network who is using these application and protocols during the peak period. Outside of peak periods, Application Management does not apply. Right now, the peak period for Application Management is Monday to Friday 4pm till 1am, and all day at the weekend.

Peak periods for Application Management may vary from time to time. This enables us to adapt the service to seasonal variations in demand, as well as the ever-changing ways in which customers use the internet.

Well I'm guessing it must be the latter as I hardly ever do heavy downloading.

The last big thing I downloaded was XP SP3 and that was a week or so ago...

It's settled to around 9k/s so I've given up, I'll try after midnight or before 4pm...

Virgin ADSL = a load of BS. I'm too far from my exchange to get Be* also. :(

Well application throttling is on everyday no matter how little or how much you download.

Cable customers shouldnt be happy either, because application throttling will be coming to them later this year as well, though not as restricted as the ADSL.

I'd be leaving, if i was you.

Due to the state of my BT line (nasty accident when I moved in to the old house with cable, wire snips and a 'mmm, we dont need this wire do we' moment) I can't get a decent Internet connection without VM.

Got to admit that the service on the whole works fine for me, solid speeds and can count the amount of times its been down on one hand in all my years of Telewest / Blueyonder / the demon we know as VM.

What I don't like is:

1. The new customer / old customer layered pricing
2. Customer services on the whole ain't worth it
3. The STM (I have hit it twice and thats it but its still not unlimited)
4. Sly price increases
5. Their smarmy adverts

As I pointed out many times in the feedback newsgroup if VM got rid of the fatcats at the top of the tree and slapped the spineless middle management about they could turn the avalanche of customers leaving into a small trickle.

However, all you get in their newsgroups is the 'thanks for the feedback, we will pass this onto the correct department' which normally means, 'ok we hit the delete key'.

Getting sensible answers from them is like pushing pish uphill.

Sure does suck, I now get capped no matter what time of the day it is, i rang up to complain about my connection being offline more than its on, They said it is cause i download too much. On avarage i use about 100gb a month. I know people who are using 1TB+ a month & don't have a word said to them.

They really do blow now :( Hopefully moving off them at the end of the month thankfully! :)

4mb cable here

Obviously their business model (and infrastructure) doesn't allow for users getting 100GB a month on a small monthly price.

Aquiss (Enta reseller) allows me 300GB off peak and 30GB on peak... and dont say bugger all, they just charge me a bit more if i go over, which is fair enough
